Match report for Wilmslow Town U14 Panthers 4 - 4 away draw with Urmston Town JFC U14 (21/09/2008)

The Under 14s put in a battling performance in response to last week’s mauling to register this new team’s first league points with a creditable 4 – 4 draw away to Urmston which is never an easy place to go.

The team were unrecognisable from the nervous group of players that took to the field last week, and the way the lads played will have been pleasing for the new management team of Julian & Gary.

Jack H, returning to the team after a season’s break fired in a hat-trick with a combination of clinical finishing and blistering pace, whilst Harrison notched up his first, and hopefully not last goal.

At the other end, the defence and midfield showed us that they can play as a unit and for the most part kept a good line to the extent that Simon enjoyed rather more protection in goal that he has been accustomed to; nevertheless, he pulled off a number of good saves to ensure that Albion came away with a share of the points.

The lads were unlucky not to come away with all three points, but a combination of inexperience and poor refereeing decisions saw a 4 -2 lead being pegged back  to  4-4. It didn’t help matters when the referee didn’t appear to be playing the offside rules at all, something that directly led to at least one of the Urmston goals. Even the Urmston coach could not believe how his lads had not been flagged offside and to his credit, expressed his amazement quite vocally.

What was especially pleasing is that we saw a good team performance and not a collection of individual players. There were periods of play where Albion dominated and opened up the Urmston defence with some slick passing and great support play. Remember lads, football is essentailly a very simple game; the more you spread out and pass, the less you have to run and chase ..... the space is out there !!!!

This result has now given the team a good platform to build on and realise that they do have the ability and attitude to hold their own in this competitive division ...same again next week please when we play the same team back at our place?
