20 November 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Panthers 0 - 9 away win against AFC Urmston Meadowside U13 Thunder (20/11/2011)
Grey skies in Flixton greeted the U13 Panthers as they welcomed back an old friend to take on an old enemy. The Panthers had failed to beat Urmston Meadowside Thunder three times last season in close, free high scoring encounters that the Thunder had won each time. Both teams were promoted to Division 2 at the end of the season and the Panthers were keen to put the jinx to rest once and for all. Brade took the gloves for the first half with TC, Harry, Neil and Max making up the back line. TJ, Ted and Jamie prowled the midfield, Kizzer and Ed the wings, and Joe led the line up front. The Thunder players towered over the Panthers, who looked positively diminutive in comparison, and if size were all that matters in this game then they would win hands down, but as Barcelona have proven this is not the case!
The Panthers chased down the Meds from the kick off and Joe was soon though as was Kieran shortly after, but both were judged to be offside, setting what became a somewhat frustrating pattern for them during the game. However when TC won the ball deep in his own half, moved forward and played a delightful through ball to Joe, Joe made no mistake in putting the Panthers 1-0 up. Within minutes Joe was in on goal again, the goalie dropped his shot but recovered before a Panther could pounce. Then Ed picked up the ball off TJ on the left and played a great cross into Joe, who finished in style to make it 2-0. Joe was soon felled in the box by the keeper, but instead of a penalty the ref gave a free kick to the Meds, much to the bemusement of the Meds manager as well as all the Panthers. Harry and Neil were on a mission to ensure no Meds forwards were going to pass them, clearing everything that came their way - whether it was in the air or on the ground - they looked rock solid. TC and Max stopped anything happening down the wings, and Ted continually broke up play in midfield. Jamie was spraying passes around well, while TJ shone on his return. TJ played elegant and simple passes forwards, backwards or to the side with accuracy and showed great movement and mobility as he hounded the Meds and created momentum for the Panthers. Ed and Kizzer threatened on both flanks while Joe tormented the Meds up front.
When Joe was clattered 25 yards out, Jamie stepped up to drive the ball over the Thunder wall and over the keeper into the roof of the net – 3-0. Max played a superb cross-field 40 yard pass to Kizzer, who lobbed the goalie expertly to make it 4-0. Then the Panthers created the move of the game where Ted broke up a Meds move deep in the Panthers half, playing it to Jamie, who in turn played it first time to TJ. TJ looked up and seeing Kizzer making the run down the wing played it to his feet. Kizzer looked up crossed it in to Joe, who in turn found Ed. Ed shot across the goalie to score in off the far post, 5-0. The Meds tried to get one back before half time but TJ was in his face so quickly that the striker put it well wide.
The half time team talk was simple “That was brilliant, keep it up!” and so the Panthers did. From the kick off they left off where they finished the first half. Max played a great ball into Joe who polished off his hat trick with aplomb, 6-0. He almost got another immediately after but was caught offside. Jamie then had a really good spell in midfield linking up with Neil and TJ to run riot. Jamie put Joe through but he was sandwiched and to everyone’s amazement nothing was given! Braden then tried to get in on the act but shot just wide. Meanwhile Harry was playing blinder at the back ensuring the ball was not passing him getting his either his head or foot on anything that came his way. Ted looked very defiant too, meaning that Ed in nets - like Braden in the first - simply needed to remain calm and collected to ensure nothing got past him.
Joe managed to get in on goal but shot straight at the keeper who saved well. The next time he decided to play in Kizzer, who once again finished in style to make it 7-0. Braden was having a very good game on the wing, playing in dangerous balls and supporting Joe as much as possible. Joe had another shot, again straight at the goalie as did Neil who had taken control in midfield, but both shots were saved well. There was a little excitement at the other end when Ed and Ted had a mix up over who would deal with a loose ball in the box, Ted cleared partially, but it was Max who was needed to save the day. Sprinting into the corner he picked up the ball deep on the left wing. He took it forward at pace then played it accurately down the line to Braden. Braden beat the full back and crossed into Joe who put away his fourth in customary style – 8-0. The Panthers then seemed to go through a period of everyone wanting to get in on the scoring, with central defenders marauding forward. The concentration was beginning to slip. Both Joe and Kizzer then fell prey to being caught offside on a number of occasions, much to their frustration. Their frustration would be lessened dramatically by checking where they are in relation to the opposition back line and last defender and then timing or bending their runs appropriately.
Braden had another shot that sadly flew over the cross bar, but soon Joe was able to put in Neil who had broken from deep into the box, to finish well. 9-0. TC showed his leadership as he reminded the team of the need to remain disciplined and defend well if they wanted to keep a clean sheet. However there was little more action except for Braden taking a kick to the head from a flying Meds foot, but he bravely shrugged it off and continued.
Both Braden and Ed played very well in goal keeping clean sheets in a very cool manner, distributing the ball very well and in Ed’s case coming out quickly and confidently to block Meds attacks. TC and Max were immense at full back keeping the wingers very quiet, while playing intelligently going forward. Ted and Neil were both immense in either midfield or at centre back, showing energy and committed challenging for the ball, rarely missing a tackle or giving the ball away cheaply. Jamie although still struggling with his knee injury continued his recovery with some great passing and movement. Kizzer, Ed and Brade all played well on the flanks with Kizzer in particular finishing clinically when the opportunity arose. Joe was a continual thorn in the Meds defenders side and ran them ragged with three assists and 4 goals….superb by anyone’s standards.
Braden’s performance on the wing, particularly the accuracy of his crossing and set up play earned him the Bronze award today. TJ shone in midfield, with his excellent passing and movement as well as continual pressing, deservedly earning the Silver award. However it was Harry’s superb performance at centre-back, a position that he is making his own, with excellent heading, tackling and distribution, meaning he thoroughly deserved his Man of the Match Gold award.
Chocolate awards: Braden for his crossing and excellent wing play, Harry for his great defensive heading at the back, TJ for a great all round performance and return to the Panthers and Max for saving the day and ensuring the clean sheet after the mix up.
