U13 Cougars throw winning lead away, a bad day at the office - one step forward , two steps back as the bad habits return

13 November 2011

Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 4 - 2 away defeat to Benchill Celtic U13 Vikings (13/11/2011)

After a couple of good wins over Ashton and Sale where the Cougars had managed to score 7 both times they travelled in confident mood to Wythenshawe for the first of 2 games against Benchill Celtic. The boys knew that if they could secure maximum points from these fixtures that they would be right up with the leading sides in the league again.

They were greeted with quite a small looking Benchill team and a very large pitch with a strong breeze blowing right to left. Winning the toss the Cougars played with the wind at their backs in the first period looking to put the game beyond Benchill quickly.

The Cougars started with the ever reliable Patrick in goal , in front of him a back line of Jamie Callum Derek and ilan, 4 in midfield With Atikan and Will.N central and James and Joey wide, this left Will K and Jake up front. On the sidelines eagerly waiting to get on were Jonathan, Joe Jayden and new boy Cameron who was at last eligible to play.

1st Half

The Cougars pressured early but struggled to put any good moves together in the windy conditions , they tried to use James and Joey on the flanks but both were quickly closed down when they got the ball. It soon became clear that in these conditions it was going to be a game of two halves with the team adapting better being the most likely to get the points.

Play from both sides was scrappy with the long hoof forward seeming to be the only tactic employed, Derek and Jamie both made good clearances and Patrick was smartly off of his line to deal with the ball over the top.

Atikan began to dominate in midfield as the Cougars  pressed forward . he found Will K on the edge of the area , Will smartly sidestepped his marker and fired in a low drive into the corner to open the scoring. more confident the Cougars continued to press and James had a good run down the left and Callum up from the back a similar run on the right.

Atikan had a shot from the left that was not fully cleared, the ball fell to Jake who jinked past a few defenders and had a shot, this was deflected into the path of Will.K who calmly slotted home from six yards for his and the Cougars second.

It now looked a question of how many as the Cougars continued to dominate, Will K rounded the keeper but a covering defender got back to clear, Joe was put clean through but under pressure fired wide. Benchill grew in confidence and started to come back into the game as the Cougars seemed to take their foot off of the gas.

Cameron came on and made his long awaited debut for the Cougars, he showed some good touches but will obviously need some games to get up with the pace.

The Cougars then  gave away an unnecessary penalty late in the half, but the chance was spurned as the taker fired well wide.

The half finished with the Cougars ruing missed opportunities and Benchill sensing there was something in the game for them

2nd Half

After a deserved half time rollicking the Cougars took to the field and the expected onslaught. Benchill were quickly on the attack and pulled a goal back after a break down the right They were now peppering Patrick's goal as the Cougars struggled to get out of their own half.

The midfield were swamped with Jayden and Will.N outnumbered as Benchill poured forward , despite several changes of personnel the Cougars struggled to get in the game and Benchill levelled after a break on the left, and then took the lead for the first time after getting behind the back line again

They scored a fourth from a poorly defended corner just before the end and but for some great work by Patrick and the overworked Ilan and Derek at the back they would have run out more comfortable winners in what was certainly a game of two halves. Even the referee enquired afterwards as to what happened such was the turn around in the game.

Summary

A really disappointing performance from the boys today and although Benchill coped much better with the pitch and the conditions the Cougars know they could have done much better both individually and collectively. Only a few can hold their heads up after this display, Jamie at left back put in his normal determined performance and Patrick between the posts was the difference between a defeat and a thrashing, Man of the Match went to Derek who had by far his best performance for the Cougars to date looking composed at the centre of defence and making countless saving tackles.

At least the boys know they have the opportunity to demonstrate to management and watching parents that this was just a one off bad day at the office as they face the same opposition again next weekend on their home pitch. With the spirit they have showed so far this season nothing less than a resounding victory is expected.

 Managers Comments

Not the best performance of the season Cougars.  For some reason, after the last two weeks excellent performances, we were heavy legged and i feel we were complacent in many area's due to Benchills lowly position in the league.  It was a very dissapointing day.

Benchill managed to put 8 past AFC Partington last week - eventually losing 10-8.  After that result, i had a feeling they would be a tougher test than we had anticipated.  However, if we had played at our best, we should have easily won this match.

We need to up our fitness levels, positioning and the midfield's protection of the defence in the coming weeks.  That is paramount.

No slip ups next week against them again.  Lets show them what the cougars are about this time please boys!
