Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 1 - 5 away win against Unicorn Athletic JFC U9 Whirlwinds (13/09/2008)

9 of the greatest footballers in the world, Wilmslow Albion U9s A Team, finally took to the field this Saturday morning in their much eagerly awaited first game of the season.

Anxious coaches, excited Mums and Dads and the boys completely un-fazed by the intense, fever pitch atmosphere!!

The lead upto the opening match was always going to be a nervous affair. With a pitch like the Amazon jungle, grass upto the lad’s knees, or in some cases waist (Sam D) the lads set about their business straight from the whistle with determination and enthusiasm.

Albion quickly mastered the playing conditions with Scott Attward opening the scoring right at the end of what had been an evenly matched first period, sending the boys into the break 1-0 up.

With confidence high, Albion came back on and played some excellent football, with their second goal coming from a set piece.  A perfectly floated corner led to a fantastic South American style headed goal from the Argentine maestro Federico Cnobel, 2-0 to Albion!

Unicorn started to apply some pressure, but were being denied by some excellent defending from the back three of Joel Constantine, Greg Stewart and Kieran Beech.  Henry Thomas pulled off some fantastic saves in goal which kept us firmly in control at the back.

Soon into the second period, Albion broke again, with some ferocious tackling and hard work from Sam Dickinson and Adam Gregson soon led to Attward displaying a fantastic solo effort to score his second goal, 3-0 to Albion!

The boys maintained pressure and only a great save from Unicorn’s keeper denied Attward a well deserved hat trick just before the break.

Into the 3rd period, Albion’s confidence continued to grow and after a succession of dazzling attacking play led to Kieran Beech sliding home Albion’s 4th goal.

Captain for the game and midfield general Drew Selby, with only 5 minutes left scored the 5th with a magnificent pile driver shot from the edge of the area. Unicorn managed a late consolation goal 2 minutes from time to end the match 5 – 1 to Albion.
