16 October 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 1 - 0 away defeat to Sale Town U13 Pirates (16/10/2011)
After a goalfest against St John's the Cougars travelled to Sale in confident mood to take on the Pirates, who were a position below them in the league. This was to be Ben's last game for the Cougars so the team were determined to put on a good performance and take the points
The pitch was in excellent condition and the rain was holding off as the teams lined up, the Cougars started with Patrick between the posts a back 4 of Jayden,Jonathan,Ilan and Callum, in midfield were Joey,Atakan,Joe and James with Will.K and Ben up front. Awaiting their chance on the sidelines were Derek,Will.N,Jake and Jamie.
1st Half
The Cougars immediately started pressing and Joe won the first corner , James and Ben were linking well and James went on a couple of mazy runs leaving several defenders in his wake. The Cougars won corner after corner but could not get an attempt on target. Then the inevitable happened , the Cougars were undone by a long ball through the middle that left a Pirates attacker one on one with Patrick, despite narrowing the angle well Patrick had no chance with the low drive that found the corner of the net that gave the Pirates the lead very much against the run of play.
The Cougars continued to dominate forcing more corners, the best chance fell to Joe who got his head to a superb cross from Atakan, his header just went over the bar though as did a strike from Jake a few minutes later. In fact the only attempt on target came from Will.K whose curling shot from the edge of the box was just pushed around by the Pirates keeper.
2nd Half
The second half started where the first ended with the Cougars on the attack Joey was added to the attack on the right and Jayden pushed into midfield. committing more players forward the Cougars left themselves more open at the back and Ilan,Jonathan and Jamie needed to make important tackles. Callum and Derek also cut out breaks from the Pirates.
Pressing forward more the Cougars had more shots on goal but as with last week the shooting was high and wide and efforts from Will.N Ben Callum Ilan and Jake failed to trouble the Pirates keeper.
Then came the games defining moment , a long kick from Patrick evaded the otherwise reliable Pirates defence and Joe was through one on one with the keeper, he took the ball on into the area but dragged his shot agonisingly just wide of the post. It definitely was not going to be the Cougars day.
Sale defended very well and in the end only good work by Patrick and a goal line Clarence by Wil K stopped them scoring again as the Cougars pushed forward in numbers.
Summary
The Cougars will feel hard done by not taking anything from this fixture but they were undone with poor finishing and not passing soon enough when on the attack. Sale to their credit also defended excellently . Shooting practice is likely to be on the agenda for the next training session. It will also be a worry that the Cougars have failed to score in 2 out of the last 3 games, and they are now without the services of principal goal threat Ben.
Jamie was deservedly awarded Man of the Match award for some solid defending.
Managers Comments
Very unlucky Cougars! The luck deserted us today when we needed it most. To be fair, we had so many chances on goal compared to the pirates and the one that made the difference shouldn't have stood - 2 yards offside! Lets hope we have some similar slices of luck in the future! I think over the next two or three training sessions, we should concentrate on passing, finishing and positioning. Had we used these 3 aspects of our game better today, i've absolutely no doubt we would have had all 3 points regardless of their solid defence.
We completely dominated throughout but as Bill say's, we just couldn't find the net. Some very promising displays throughout the team and it is now becoming apparent, the fitness levels of the boys is increasing week by week. Two week break now boys so lets come back more determined than ever to show this division what the Cougars are made of!
Finally, as we know it was Ben's last game today. I would just like to wish Ben and his Family, the very best of luck for the future and thanks for your goals Ben! :-)
