U13 Cougars do double over local rivals - bragging rights assured after another battling display

Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 2 - 1 home win against Wilmslow Sports JFC U13 Wolves (25/09/2011)

The Cougars lined up at a blustery Jim Evison for the return match against Wilmslow Sports Wolves who they had overcome the previous week mainly due to a fine defensive performence and hitting them quickly on the break. The same tactics were planned this week. The cougars had a full squad of 15 to choose from with Derek and Joey returning and Jamie making his debut.

Manager Gary was away studying this week ,but shouting at the boys in his place were Bill and Raymond. and as usual Mark was letting them know what he thought from the sidelines. With a strong breeze the boys elected to play with the slope and the wind in the first half hoping to build up a good lead before the break. They were reminded beforehand of the need to track back from midfield and help defend the inevitable onslaught from the Wolves who were determined to avenge the previous weeks reversal.

1st half

The Cougars started brightly with Will K and Ben linking well up front. Will Nicol in a defensive midfield role was winning lots of tackes and distributing well to Atakan and Callum. The back line of Jayden Ilan Jonathan and debutant Jamie were looking solid and as always Patrick was commanding his area and distributing the ball well. the wide midfielders Callum and Joey were also listening to instructions and provided great cover to the full backs.

Although competing fiercly the cougars struggled to create any clear cut chances with ben going the closest.

the deadlock was broken after 15 mins though when Jayden forward from right back in support of the attack had an attempt from the edge of the area, his initial attempt was blocked but the ball returned to him and he dispatched a strong shot into the corner of the net to open the scoring.

the four substitutes Joe Jake Derek and James then appeared and although the match remained even the cougars could not extend their lead and Patrick was forced into a couple of saves as the Cougars defended desperately, with Ilan Jonathan and derek all making vital interceptions and clearences.

2nd Half

With the need to give all the boys some playing time more substitutions were made at the break and playing against the elements a 4-5-1 formation was adopted.  In midfield Will N, Atakan and Callum battled away trying to find James Joe and Jake on the flanks, as with last week though the Cougars showed some nice touches on the ball but struggled to retain possession for any length of time and inevitably the defence was forced back. It seemed only a matter of time before the Wolves would equalize and only a couple of fine saves by Patrick preserved the Cougars lead.

Restricted to playing on the break the Cougars looked to play the ball over the top for Ben to run onto and this proved a good way of relieving the pressure on an overworked defence. The Cougars forced a succession of corners all well taken by Will K , from the last of these Jayden headed narrowly wide.

The Cougars did extend their lead though when Ben who was having another excellent game fired home from just inside the area to make it 2-0 to the Cougars.

With a two goal cushion the Cougars relaxed a little and were quickly punished when a Wolves attacker was not closed down and had time to line up and dispatch a strong strike from the edge of the area which found the top corner giving Patrick no chance.

The last ten minutes seemed like an hour with the Cougars defending desperately but holding on to gain another hard fought victory over their local rivals.

Summary

Another gritty defensive display from the Cougars which earned them their second victory of the season moving them up to 5th in the table only a point behind the leaders. It was really pleasing to see some boys listening to instructions and keeping position today in midfield rather than getting caught too far upfield and being unable to get back. It was only the last ten minutes where we fell apart a little on the right hand side and allowed the Wolves back into the game.

Some fine performences today , Ilan at the back was outstanding and was deservedly awarded Man of the Match , Jamie had a very solid debut and Derek made some vital tackles , in midfield Will Nicol was superb and ably supported by Atakan and Callum, and as usual Ben provides the team with a constant attacking threat. Patrick as always was solid between the posts

If the boys are able to put in this amount of effort every week and carry out instructions from the manager and coach then a successful season lies ahead. They must also realize that with a squad of 15 now they will all have to spend time as substitute particularly those who want to play in more attacking roles, the chances of which will always be limited when we are up against strong opposition.

Special thanks also to Raymond Graham for helping with the set up and running of the team and choosing Man of the Match.
