24 September 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 1 - 3 away win against Ashton on Mersey JFC U10 Pumas (24/09/2011)
The Panthers made the trip to Ashton in good heart after an impressive opening day victory over the same team. They were delighted to find a long and wide pitch awaiting them, but they were reminded that Ashton would be a tougher proposition on their home pitch. This week they were also without the influentual Davy
The Panthers started with Max in goal a back two of Marcus and Martin who was captain for the day. Sam sat in central midfield ahead of these two with Ben and Jack exploiting the flanks and Dillan alone in attack. Waiting on the bench were Gabriel Hayden and Ollie.
1st Period
Although the conditions were ideal for the Panthers passing game they took a little while to get used to the much larger pitch and it was immeadiatly clear Ashton were determined to avenge the previous weeks defeat. Slowly though the Panthers gained the upper hand and enjoyed most of the possession forcing 6 corners in the period. Ashton defended solidly until a long clearence arrived at Marcus's feet deep in his own half, he played a lovely long ball through to Dillan who beat the last defender and fired home to make the score 1-0 to the Panthers.
The Panthers could not extend their lead in the 1st period though Martin came close twice with long range efforts which the Ashton keeper turned onto the woodwork.
2nd Period
The 3 subs appeared for Max, Martin and Dillan. Again the Panthers stormed forward forcing a series of corners, Marcus and Jack both had efforts on goal well saved. Ashton were slowly creeping back into the game though, and signalled their intent when an effort from a free kick narrowly cleared the bar after Ollie was adjudged to have been a little too forceful when tacking an Ashton forward. Ashton deservedly equalized shortly after though with an attempt from 30 yards that just evaded Gabriels attempt to save. This really seemed to inspire Ashton who for a spell looked the more determined team and they were unlucky not to take the lead shortly after only being denied by a great goal line clearence by Ollie.
Martin now returned to the action in midfield hoping to wrestle back control of the game, he along with Ben and Sam kept compusure and were looking to get the ball to the wide areas. This strategy was to prove fruitful and the Cougars restored their lead after a good move down the right with Marcus finishing well after great work by Ben and Hayden.
The Panthers finished the period the stronger forcing 4 more corners though Ashton came close to levelling again only being denied by the crossbar and more firm tackling from Ollie and Sam.
3rd Period.
The last period saw Max and Dillan reappear and although Ashton were winning more of the 50-50 balls the Panthers passing gave them the advantage, and they extended their lead after Ben won the ball and surged forward playing in Dillan to make the score 3-1.
Ashton tried to rally and both Max and then Gabriel were tested and Marcus Martin and Sam made good blocks and clearences as the Panthers held on for a hard fought victory.
Summary
A really good battling performence against a much improved and determined Ashton team who will definitely give other teams a difficult time on their home patch. This victory increases the Panthers winning run to 7 and they will be looking forward to a top of the table clash against Fletcher Moss next week
The Panthers demonstrated today that by staying true to their passing philosophy they can overcome bigger and stronger opposition and by using the wings and moving the ball quickly will create lots of goal scoring opportunities.
As a result the Panthers are now proudly sitting at the top of division 2 on goal difference
