7 September 2008 Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 2 - 3 away win against Bedians (07/09/2008)
After a week of relentless unseasonal weather and a couple of ground inspections, the decision was taken to defy the weather and play this fixture.
Bedians started well and passed the ball nicely on a difficult pitch. Indeed most of the first half was spent with Bedians piling pressure on the Wilmslow goal and keeper Andy King pulled off a series of fine saves to keep Albion in the game.
The stalwart defence held out until the halftime whistle and much needed refreshments and guidance from the bench were taken.
A different Wilmslow Albion appeared for the second half and within five minutes of the restart player/manager Tim Royle scored the first goal of the game. A precision pass from Paul Affleck split the previously underworked Bedians defence and Royle curled a low shot into the corner beyond the despairing dive of the keeper.
Five minutes later and the rejuvenated Albion pounced again with the versatile Dave Hall drilling a shot in following some nice build up play. Albion, sensing the victory pushed on again and another ball in from the right found Kev Barber who drove the ball in off the far post. Albion pressed hard and were unlucky not to hit the target on two further occasions when Royle just volleyed over the bar and Hall chipped one way off target.
With the pitch worsening and legs tiring, Albion eased off only for Bedians to come in with a headed goal fifteen minutes from the end. Bedians continued to attack and were repelled again by the in-form keeper King. Rotation of the squad kept this revival by Bedians at bay until the dying seconds when a shot from outside the box found its way past everyone and ended up in the bottom left hand corner of the Wilmslow goal.
It was however one of the last actions of the game and Wilmslow held on for the victory. A cruel game for a useful Bedians side who will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.
