9 May 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Panthers 2 - 0 win against Broadheath Central U11 Cobras (08/05/2011)
Click image above for larger picture It took three attempts, but the Panthers finally showed their true colours against league champions Broadheath in their cup final encounter at Trafford FC.
After two league defeats, the boys were wary of their opponents as they took to the pitch. Pre-match words from the team of officials and the "Champions League" handshakes in the centre circle added to the Cup Final atmosphere. The sun broke through the clouds and conditions were perfect.
The first half was nip and tuck. The Panthers started the brighter, with a series of good breaks, especially down the left flank. Broadheath countered with strong running through the centre of the field. Both sides created a handful of chances in the opening 20 minutes - Wilmslow fired wide on a couple of occasions and there were headed chances at each end of the pitch. Broadheath suffered a blow mid-way through the first half when their keeper was caught in a challenge for the ball and aggravated an injury which meant he played no further part in the game. In the other goal, Henry produced a great save to keep the scores level.
There was little to separate the sides when Nathan won a free kick on the left-corner of the Broadheath area. Dan sized-up the kick and sent the ball high into the top right hand corner to delight the Wilmslow faithful.
Half-time came and went with the Panthers looking increasingly assured at the back and in midfield, despite persistent Broadheath pressure. Nathan - a constant nuisance for the opposition back line - was replaced mid-way through the second half by Matias who quickly found the back of the net, only to see his effort ruled out for offside. Moving into the last quarter, Calvin returned to the fray and the Panthers looked more incisive coming forward. Matias got a second sight of goal, beating the offside trap and 'keeper to double the Panthers' lead.
Broadheath continued to press until the final whistle, keeping Henry busy without creating any clear chances. 2-0 the final score.
This was an entertaining game played in good spirit that was worthy of the cup final occasion. Broadheath, obviously disappointed, were extremely gracious in defeat and we look forward to future encounters.
Congratulations Panthers, a well deserved victory and a great way to end the season. And thanks to the parents (on both sides) for their good natured support which helped to make this a fantastic occasion.
