Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Jaguars 1 - 3 away win against Unicorn Athletic JFC U9 Vikings (07/05/2011)

The Jaguars arrived in Timperely, looking for revenge against a very good Unicorn Vikings team, to finish the season in A Division on a high. The Vikings scored a very early goal to take a one nil lead. It woke up our boys who knew they were going to have to play their best football, if they were to get a result. The game was brought back to life by a cool Dante finish from a Jack 'Delap' throw to level the score at one all.

In the second period it was all about containing the Vikings and hitting them on the break. Freddie made a couple of good saves and Cameron, taking an excellent free kick, looked after the skillful number 10 who barely touched the ball. Will and Joe set 'goal machine' Matt up on a couple of occasions. Neither side scored, setting up a thrilling finale.

The last third of the game was a terrific attacking performance. Twice Harrison cannoned the ball up the pitch for Max and Matt to score goals in a period that showed how well the Jaguars can play when they pass and move. The link up play was outstanding and there could easily have been a couple more goals. Three, one to the Jags and a victory to savour.

Freddie played the whole match in goals making some great saves and putting pressure on the Vikings defence with some long kicks.  Jack, Harrison and Joel both showed what reliable defenders they are when they are at their best. The boys stayed on their feet to frustrate the opposing attackers, setting up the team for a great comeback. The team is blessed to have three such equally matched,  talented and brave defenders. Connor was back to his best playing deep in the middle. His outstanding tackling and passing are key to the tactics used.  Cameron's contribution was vital, with a man marking job reminiscent of the Fletcher Moss victory. It's frustrating for Connor and Cameron who are both excellent when attacking, but if they sit deep it makes it very difficult for opposing teams to score. Will and Joe have both played extremely well this season and today was no exception. They both got stuck in defensively and made some fine passes. Joe's long range shots and Will's pace are legendary. Ollie worked really hard today and was unfortunate not to score. He pinned back the Vikings' defence and put in a couple of good tackles. Matt, Max and Dante all put in super performances. Matt has finished the season the top league scorer for the Jags with Max the top scorer including friendlies. Dante is not far behind with his goal tally, and his overall contribution today was everything that the managers hoped for. This result gives us reason for optimism looking to the future.

Nick and John would like to thank the players and parents for their cards and gifts. It's hard to put into words how much this season has meant to us. We have done our best and learned from every game. We have tried to be fair to all the boys and we hope they have become better players and enjoyed being part of the team.

Today Max wins Man of the Match for a magnificent team performance. His tackling has improved beyond recognition since he joined the team. Dante wins the Silver award  for a brilliant individual display including a last ditch tackle on the edge of our penalty area. Harrison, awarded the Bronze, was a rock at the back, also delivering two huge clearances that resulted in goals.
