U12 Panthers fight to the last - as two late goals ground the tiring Kestrels

Match report for Wilmslow Town U12 Panthers 4 - 6 away win against Broadheath Central U12 Kestrels (10/04/2011)

Sun cracked the flags as the Panthers turned up in Broadheath to face the Kestrels. Harry was between the sticks for last time this season, with TB, TC, Ted and Charlie starting in defence, Morgan and Neil in midfield, Jamie and Braden providing the width, with TJ just of Sam, who led the line.

The game started evenly with the Panthers tested down the Kestrels right hand side, which Charlie and Ted dealt with comfortably. Harry also had to get out quickly, closing down and gathering up a ball over the top while TC and TB dealt with all that came down the Kestrels left. Neil and Morgan closed down and distributed the ball well from midfield, while Braden and Jamie looked comfortable but not dangerous when the ball was moved wide. On the whole the Panthers were playing too narrowly. Sam and Morgan both had good efforts on goal that were saved by the keeper. Then 10 minutes in TJ played an exquisite ball across the Kestrel’s box for Jamie, who laid it off to Sam 20 yards out. He took the shot; the goalie couldn’t hold onto the ball and parried it into the net 1-0. The Panthers had hardly finished celebrating before the Kestrels played a ball over the top that because of the high line the defence were holding, made it more difficult to control. The Broadheath striker beat his man and finished extremely well across Harry giving him no chance. Then within a few minutes they did it again – a ball over the top – defence unable to deal with it, and again in quick succession – great finishes twice leaving Harry once again diving in vain without much hope of getting near them – 1-3. Callum, Adam, George, Joe and Max replaced Sam, Jamie, TC, Braden and Charlie. Max was immediately called upon to defend a few raids down the right which he did superbly. Adam busied himself winning and distributing the ball well in midfield. George started to threaten and get in some good crosses down the right, while Joe started to look a threat down the left. TJ worked hard and passed the ball well combining well with George. George got in down the right; put the ball across for Callum who finished in style from close range - 2-3. And so the half ended, some excellent passing football but the Panthers needed to defend slightly deeper to deal with the ball over the top.

After the half time team talk, the defence dropped a little deeper on clearances with Neil, Max and Ted all defending well. The Panthers put pressure on, but were caught just offside a few times. George combined well with Morgan to beat the offside trap, but Morgan’s shot was well saved. Joe curled a great cross into Callum after beating a few Kestrels, but Callum shot narrowly wide. Callum was again thwarted by the Kestrels keeper coming out well to block his shot, while the keeper - now playing out of his skin - denied Adam from a very good 18 yard strike. Joe had a long range effort from wide on the left that resulted in a corner. George took it but it felt a bit too short to be dangerous. Sam, Jamie, TC, Braden and Charlie replaced TJ, Neil, TB, Morgan and Ted. Callum and Adam both tried to spring the offside but were caught just off. Joe the picked up the ball in midfield, beat four mesmerised Kestrels as he weaved his way down the left, put in a great cross, which Callum finished from 3 yards. However Broadheath weren’t going to lie down, attacking down the right. Max slid in for the tackle, clearing well for a corner. The defence cleared the corner but the Kestrels won the ball in midfield and with a superb strike took the lead again 3-4. Buoyed by taking the lead again the Kestrels applied the pressure, with the Panthers struggling to clear another corner. The mêlée that broke out in the box was great comedy with Sam appearing to have a shot at Harry but it was well blocked thankfully. It was also stressful for the management as they seemed to be shouting “clear it” endlessly. Gradually the Panthers won the ‘Battle in the Box’ with TC finally clearing the ball effectively. Then Max broke up another Kestrels attack, passed up the line to Braden who played it into Joe. Joe rounded the Kestrels full back and crossed it into Callum, who passed it back to Joe. Joe crossed it in to Sam who blasted the ball from range into the net to equalise – 4-4. Callum now on hat trick, had another shot from distance that went just wide. Sam picked up a ball from Charlie and let rip again just to see the goalie pull off an excellent save to deny him. George took the corner but the goalie punched it behind. George took the next one and the Kestrels cleared but only to Callum, whose shot was parried by the goalie and he was unable to squeeze the rebound in. Sam had another shot that went wide and then in an attempt to win a throw, blasted the ball at a Kestrel, who fluttered out of the way while the ball flew to the other side of the car park.
With less than 3 minutes to go, the boys found another gear. Jamie won the ball in the air and when the Kestrel failed to control the second ball, he pounced to put Callum in, who finally chalked up his first hat trick for the Panthers – 5-4. Callum - on fire now - had another shot parried, then from the rebound he hit a Kestrel who deflected the ball onto the post and out for a corner. Jamie curled in the corner and despite his height Callum beat every Kestrel to the ball, and headed powerfully into the top corner of the net – 6-4. And so the game finished a fine victory in an excellent game.

Thanks to all the parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents who came to support the team and to Stu for his work with the team. Finally thanks to Ian Milner for refereeing the game so well and to Steve Conner and Steve Raff and the Kestrels for providing such excellent opposition and playing the game in such a great spirit.
