A windy grey night on the A34 roundabout proved too much for the Colts as the Panthers completed a very convincing double over their local rivals. Playing against the wind, the Colts kicked off and quickly established territorial dominance, causing Jamie in nets, TB, TC, Ted and particularly Charlie to be on the alert, but they dealt with the early pressure down the Panthers left with calm skill and good clearances. Harry and Neil got the ball down in midfield and started to link up with the attacking four. Braden was having a great game leading the line, with TJ slotting in passes and Joe supporting down the left as Shorty marauded down the right when the Panthers managed to switch play. As the match progressed, the Panthers put more pressure on the Colts defence, who defended very well but Kamran, the excellent Colts keeper, was much the busier of the two keepers, while Jamie played a very calm and confident game, coming out quickly to snuff out striking opportunities and distributing the ball well. After about 12 minutes the Panthers broke the deadlock. Teddy, who was excellent once again, cleared out of defence and found Neil who cleverly played the ball to TJ, who slipped a delightful through ball to Braden who then lobbed the helpless Colts keeper brilliantly to take the lead -1-0. The game continued in a similar vein with Shorty sent on his speedy way by Harry who had now started to take charge in midfield with Neil and from more great through balls from TJ and cross-field balls from Joe. TC and TB were commanding at the back, not giving the Colts a sniff. On 20 minutes Callum, Adam, Morgan, Max and George, replaced TJ, Shorty, TC, Charlie and Joe and the Panthers switched into their pre-planned new positions and continued much the same way. Braden was showing his acrobatic skills with a couple of cool overhead kicks to keep attacks going down the left and had an excellent game too. Harry gelled quickly with Morgan, who was in to challenges quickly and they worked together to ensure a good supply to Callum and Adam. George got down the wing a few times to get good crosses in, but unfortunately Callum was unable to convert the difficult chances and so the half ended 1-0. Towards the end of the half the Panthers were finding it difficult to concentrate due to a horrendous accident on the A34 roundabout that caused a mass exodus from the spectating parents, and much commotion, as the emergency services gradually arrived on the scene. We wish the woman who was extremely badly hurt in the accident a speedy recovery from her injuries and hope that it was nowhere near as bad for her as it seemed.

With the wind behind them the Panthers refocused on their game, kicked off and decided to camp out in the Colts half. TB and Ted held a high line as the Panthers set about asserting their dominance. However it was not until after TJ, Shorty, TC, Charlie and Joe replaced Neil, Harry, TB, Ted and Braden and another positioning reshuffle had occurred, that the Panthers ramped up their lead. Callum won a corner on the right that Joe curled in and Shorty was able to get on the end of it and put it away from 6 yards – 2-0. Callum, now with the bit between his teeth was released by Morgan, and was felled in the box. Jamie came up from his place in nets to bury the penalty with his usual calmness – 3-0. Max combined well with Joe on the left as did George and Adam on the right, with Morgan sitting so Shorty could get forward and cause more trouble. Kamran, the Colts goalie continued to impress as he foiled many more attempts by the Panthers until they won even more corners. Joe curled it in from one side, while George curled it in from the other, but Kamran and the Colts defence kept the ball out of their net. Once again Joe got in down the left and put an excellent ball into Callum, who finished in style from close range 4-0. TC swapped roles with Morgan and started to create things in midfield which led to Adam winning another corner. Joe curled it in and Callum volleyed it. Kamran seemed to have saved it brilliantly, but it was just behind the line and the ref who was well positioned spotted it and gave the goal, 5-0. This was such a shame because the save which was a point blank instinctive save deserved more. Kamran was the Colts’ man of the match for the second time this season in my opinion. He did not deserve from his performance to have been beaten 5 times. And so the game ended.

Summary

All the Panthers played really well, the passing and movement were excellent when they got the ball down on the ground. TJ, Braden, Shorty, Joe, George and Adam all played with skill and awareness. TC and Ted were immense again at the back, with Charlie, TB and Max. Neil and Morgan played very well in midfield as Morgan returned to his best again having shaken off his back injury. However he did become a bit over confident towards the end as he tried to dribble out of defence a couple of times too many.  However Jamie looked very confident in goal and clocked up - with the help of another excellent defensive performance - another clean sheet. Callum looked back to his predatory best, spurred on by the Derby spirit no doubt as he desperately tried to complete a hat trick, and Harry put in his best performance in midfield of the season, winning the ball consistently, clearing confidently in defensive positions and passing accurately and simply to keep possession and create attacking opportunities for the front four.

The game was played with a real spirit of friendship, as it should be for what was as good as two groups of friends playing each other. Thanks to Tony and Matt for hosting a great game of football and to all the Colts for making a very competitive game of it for the first 40 minutes.

A special thought to Sam who was ill and couldn’t play today. Also we wish all the very best to Nathan, as he will be spending the summer training with Liverpool FC having been spotted recently by their youth goalkeeping coach. He richly deserves to be recognised having worked so hard to turn himself into an excellent goalkeeper. We are all very proud of him!

Thanks to all the parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents who came to support the team and to Stu for his work with the team. Finally thanks to Ollie for refereeing the game so well.
