2 April 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 3 - 2 home win against Wythenshawe Town U9 (02/04/2011)
After a couple of defeats , The Panthers lined up against a big Wyhenshawe side with the formation that had proved so succesful earlier in the season where they racked up nine straight wins. This involved playing 3 at the back and it was Sam who was chosen to sit alongside Ollie and Martin to shore up the back line in the hope of stemming the flow of goals that the Panthers had conceded recently.
1st Period
Archie was Captain for the day and led the line as the Panthers won the toss and kicked downhill in the first period. The back 3 protecting Gabriel looked solid and soon showed they could tackle firmly as well. Marcus and Dillan were working hard in the midfield and trying to get forward to support Archie who was holding the ball up well and keeping the Wythenshawe backline occupied.
Playing 3 at the back gave the opportunity for Ollie and Martin to get forward in support, and the Panthers went ahead when Ollie knocked a ball into the area, it broke for Dillan who fired a left foot shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner to open the scoring. The crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief as the Panthers had started slowly in the last couple of games falling behind as a result.
Wyhenshawe hit back though and equalised after working the ball well from right to left and a man over dispatched a powerful shot past gabriel to level the scores.
The defences were in control and as a result there were few clear cut chances, however as the period came to a close Marcus had a good run ending up with a shot that just went wide.
2nd Period
Davy Ben and Aidan joined the fray for the second period and were soon involved in the action. Ben was having some success down the right and Wythenshawe were pushed back. From this pressure Ben found Martin up in support and The Panthers lead was restored when Martin shot home from the edge of the box.
Davy and Aidan were also probing down the left and were being well supplied by Sam who was intercepting well and passing out of defense. Wyhenshawe continued to look dangerous though particularly down the left and a strong run and shot drew them level. Gabriel saw more of the ball in this period and his handling as always was superb. Some desperate goal line defending also ensured that the Panthers ended the second period on level terms.
3rd Period
The Panthers continued with 3 at the back for the start of the final period. Ben and Davy showed their versatility and willingness to play for the team by slotting effortlessly alongside Sam at the back. Aidan Archie and Dillan were also getting back and denying Wythenshawe from having any clear chances on goal.
The Panthers were lacking Jack's presence this week wide on the left, but Davy set about filling this void and made some good runs forward from the back before being forced off with a nasty looking hip injury.
The Panthers then switched tactics going in search of the victory Martin re joined the action in attack with Archie and Dillan alonside in support and Marcus just behind , this left only Ben and Ollie to protect Gabriel but the Panthers were determined to gain another victory.
This attacking tactic was rewarded. Ben took a goal kick which found Martin inside the Wythenshawe half , he controlled well and played in Dillan on the right , there did not appear to be too much danger but Dillans powerful shot caught the keeper by surprise and found the net for the all important 5th goal.
The Panthers held on well in the final minutes with Dillan in particular getting in some important challenges.
Summary
A much needed confidence boosting victory for the Panthers who at last seem to be listening to the managers instructions , going back to 3 in defense gave the Panthers a solid base and platform to start attacks from. With so much versatility and commitment in the team the Panthers are sure to gain more victories in a league made up of strong and physical teams.
