Slow start costs U9 Panthers progression in the cup - Panthers battle hard but cannot peg Ashton back

26 March 2011

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 1 - 3 home defeat to Ashton on Mersey JFC U9 (26/03/2011)

After having most of the game the previous week but losing to Altrincham after being unable to find the net The Panthers turned their attention to the cup where they entertained Ashton on Mersey. The two sides had met earlier in the season and after an entertaining game had shared the points, so the Panthers knew they were going to have to be at their best to advance to the semi finals of the cup.

They were reminded beforehand of the importance of keeping their shape and staying true to the passing philosophy that had served them so well earlier in the season. As this was a cup game new signing Archie was ineligable but the other 10 led by Ollie were raring to go.

1st period

The Panthers lined up with Gabriel in goal a back two of Martin and Ollie, 3 in the midfield with Sam in the Centre and Ben and Jack wide which left Davy as the sole attacker. On the bench were Marcus Aidan and Dillan .

The Panthers started slowly giving the ball away straight from the kick off and Gabriel was forced into a save from a strike from distance. Moments later the ball was lost again and another long range strike found the net with Gabriel unsighted.

Ashton were attacking through the Centre and had some tricky players, one of this ran across the face of the defense and managed to get another powerful shot away which flew past Gabriel to make the score 2-0 to Ashton with only five minutes gone.

This stunned the Panthers into action but they were getting crowded out in midfield and were struggling to create any chances. Slowly though the crept back into it with both Ben and Davy going close.  Jack was also getting into it on the left and from a ball knocked across Davy controlled well and finished to reduce the defecit. Matin and Ollie with Sam's support were now policing the Ashton attack well and the Panthers finished the ist period the stronger.

2nd period

The Panthers started the second period brightly with the introduction of Marcus Aidan and Dillan , and nearly equalized after Dillan played Sam through but his attempt on goal just went wide with the keeper beaten. Martin then also came close with a massive clearence from his own half which bounced over the keeper but then just cleared the crossbar.

Ashton then increased their lead when the won a free kick and Gabriel could only parry into the path of an ashton forward who followed up well to make the score 3-1 . The Panthers then applied pressure winning 3 consecutive corners but could not make any inroads into Ashton's lead despite pushing Martin into attack.

3rd Period

The last period saw the return of Davy Ben and Jack and the Panthers continued to press without any success. Jack just shot over and Dillan had a fantastic run and after beating 5 men could not quite get enough power into his shot to beat the Ashton keeper. Dillan fired up then had an ugly coming together with Ashton;s best player and both received a stern lecture from the referee.

Despite trying their best the Panthers could not close the gap and therefore ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline and are out of the cup.

Summary

A keenly contested game which the Panthers threw away in the first five minutes. there were some positives to take away though a number of boys played well and Ben Davy Martin and Marcus showed how versatile they can be in different positions. what they have to appreciate though is that is very important to play as a team even if it means not being able to play in your favoured position.

Well played to Ashton, what was noticable between the periods was how disciplined they were and all listened attentivly to the managers and coaches instructions. If the Panthers can add this quality to their other skills it will not be long before they are back to winning ways again.

MOM -Aidan - the best behaved Panther by far

Silver - Dillan battled away and never gave up

Bronze - Davy - looked lively up front and solid at the back.
