Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 3 - 1 away defeat to Altrincham FC Juniors U9 (A) (19/03/2011)

The Panthers travelled to Altrincham on Saturday to take on the Pumas. Previously they had been pegged back at Benchill and the free scoring of  early season games had stuttered a little in recent weeks. They were met with another small pitch to play on and again larger opposition. The sun was shining though and the boys were raring to go.

1st  Period

The Panthers started brightly and were keen to get the ball wide to Jack and Ben on the wings Ben had the first shot on target and the Panthers were battling hard to get control of the midfield. Martin and Ollie at the back were linking well with the midfield and giving Gabriel good protection, Davy in centre midfield was getting stuck in and Aidan made some good attacking runs only to be crowded out by the Puma's defence.

With the pitches now a little firmer the ball was bouncing more than normal and the Panthers conceded a free kick just inside half way for handball. there appeared to be no danger but the free kick evaded the defense and went in past an unsighted Gabriel.

The Panthers soon hit back and equalised when Ben touched on one of Martin's long throws , Davy who is deadly from two yards applied the finishing touch to level the scores.

There was no further scoring in the first period though Gabriel made a good save and Davy nearly scored again following a corner.

2nd Period

The second period saw the introduction of Archie,Sam,Dillan and Marcus, these four all linked well as the Panthers pushed forward in search of another goal. The small pitch again meant the the Panthers passing game was being stifled and Altrincham were quick to close down any Panthers attack . The boys also seemed to want to dwell on the ball and following a dispossession in midfield Altrincham went into the lead. despite good tackles from Sam and Ollie the ball broke kindly for the Puma's and an attacker beat Gabriel from just inside the area to make the score 2-1 to Altrincham.

The Panthers went on the counter attack and Davy Archie and Dillan all went close. Jack then hit the bar , Dillan then through on goal was denied by the Puma's keeper. It looked already as it was going to be another of those frustrating days.

3rd Period

The final period saw the return of Martin, Ben and Aidan . The Panthers were now in all out attack mode and had the Puma's pinned in their own half . Despite forcing several corners and countless throw ins the Panthers could not breach the Altrincham defense. Dillan looked to have equalised with a header that the Puma's goal keeper just clawed off the line. Martin then came close with a powerful free kick, it was not to be and inevitably Altrincham broke and scored a third goal as the Panthers over committed players forward.

Final Score 1-3

Goals - Davy

Assists -Ben

Summary

Not the Panthers day, and despite having the most possession and attempts on goal the Panthers slipped to their second defeat of the season, against a well organised and tough Altrincham team. There was some good football played though and on another day with a little more luck the Panthers could have run out easy winners.

Man of The Match - Ben - Great work down the right unlucky not to score

Silver - Marcus - getting better with every game and dominated in midfield

Bronze - Aidan - worked hard up front with no reward.
