Winning Ugly in Urmston - U12 Panthers close in on league leaders as they seriously wound the Pumas challenge

13 March 2011

Match report for Wilmslow Town U12 Panthers 0 - 2 away win against Urmston Town JFC U12 (A) (13/03/2011)

The rain cleared and the sun shone bright as the wind whistled across a soggy and muddy Barton Clough. Well the pitch wasn’t pretty and nor was the football today. A depleted Panthers squad lined up against Urmston Town Pumas with Jamie in goal, Harry, TC, Ted and Charlie in defence, TB, Braden, Morgan, Sam and Joe in midfield and Callum upfront with Max on the bench but rolled into the game after 10 minutes, as the sub rotated every 10 minutes. Urmston Pumas have improved a lot since the Panthers’ early season victory against them. The Pumas have climbed to fourth in the table, with the potential (if they win their games in hand) to catch the Panthers, while at the same time have claimed a number of notable scalps on their way to the League Cup Final.

The first half was scrappy from start to finish, with very few moments to call decent football. Sam was looking dangerous every time the Panthers won a corner, with some great deliveries, while TB looked threatening as he weaved his way through Urmston players. TC had a very strong defensive performance, as did Morgan in midfield and Callum in attack. Jamie looked confident in nets and was untroubled throughout the half. However the rest of the team struggled to make any impression on Urmston. The Pumas won the midfield catfight because the Panthers’ central midfielders, for the most part, let them by, watching from attacking positions, rather than winning the ball to create danger. However TB was always capable of creating danger down the right and won a number of corners. As the half wore on, with 20 minutes gone, Sam curled in another of his dangerous corners and Callum headed it strongly into the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-0 at half time.

After the break, with the wind behind them and a ‘flea in the ear’ to improve the performance, particularly in midfield, but also to be more confident, control the ball and pass, the Panthers kicked off. However the game followed a similar pattern, mainly down the Panthers left, frustrating one Panther so much that he swapped flanks so he would see more of the ball. Unfortunately his opposite number didn’t, so the Panthers ended up with two wingers on the same side of the pitch. In desperation, to have a greater part in the game, the same Panther took it on himself to take every throw, free kick and corner, which must be frustrating for his team mates, who would also like the opportunity to do something! This coupled, with taking the ball off his team-mates toes (an activity shared by another Panther as well), meant the team played less like a team than at anytime this season. Very disappointing!! But help in the form of an enormous kick from Jamie was at hand. Jamie, having cleared up at the back, launched the ball out of his hands, bypassing the midfield to Braden, who with customary skill, took the ball on the first bounce and lobbed the goalie superbly for 2-0 to the Panthers. TB and TC continued to shine while Max and Charlie made important challenges that ensured Jamie was able to keep his second clean sheet of the season.
