U12 Cougars keep up the chase on league leaders - Cougars put 8 past St Johns

13 March 2011

Match report for Wilmslow Town U12 Cougars 8 - 0 home win against St Johns U12 (13/03/2011)

The Cougars lined up in good heart against bottom of the table St Johns Celtic. Performances had really improved in recent weeks and at last the sun was shining.

Connor was captain for the day and won the toss. the Cougars lined up with Patrick in Goal a back four of Luis William Jayden and Will Nicol. in midfield Jake Joe and Reece in the centre with Callum and Connor wide. Emmanuel as usual led the line. waiting eagerly in reserve was Jonathan.

The Cougars started brightly and attacked down both flanks. St Johns were playing a disciplined high back line and it was not long before the first of many offsides was called. The Cougars despite lots of practice still do not seem to have mastered the art of staying onside.

The deadlock was broken when William played a good ball through  the defense for Emmanuel to run onto. As usual he kept calm and finished well to open the scoring. Shortly afterwards Emmanuel turned provider knocking the ball back to Luis who hit a great looping shot over the keeper from 25 yards to make the score 2-0

The back line were comfortably holding St Johns at bay with Jayden and Will coming out to meet the ball. Luis who seemed to pop up all over the pitch covered well behind them. Patrick had little to trouble him but needed to be smart off his line a couple of times to deal with the ball over the top.

The Cougars extended their lead through Connor after a good run by Emmanual and a pull back by Reece. Then Callum and Emmanuel combined well with Emmanuel getting his second to make the half time score a comfortable 4-0

2nd Half

The second period saw William and Callum exchange places as well as Luis and Jake, Jonathan was now on in his usual centre back role allowing Will N to revert to defensive midfield.

Connor Joe and Emmanuel were all caught well offside again to the frustration of coaches and supporters. A frustrated Joe received a stern lecture from the referee for kicking the ball away.

The Cougars continued to press for more goals with William and Connor having attempts well saved. The St Johns keeper was having a good game, he could not keep the Cougars at bay for long though, and William looking dangerous  in a more attacking role got the fifth goal with a firm shot under the keeper after being played in by Emmanuel.

Luis also looking a threat in a more advanced role played in Emmanuel for his hat trick and then winning the ball in midfield ran beyond the defense and finished well to score his second goal and the Cougars seventh.

There was just time for several more offsides before Callum who had exchanged positions with William again ran through to fire home making the final score 8-0 to the Cougars

 Summary

A good win for the Cougars which keeps their outside hopes of promotion alive. Despite scoring eight goals though a lot of the bad habits from early in the season returned time after time the midfield and forwards were caught offside and were slow to track back when losing the ball against a better team this could prove costly. Nevertheless the team are now playing with more confidence with the back line looking increasingly assured. amazingly this was only the first clean sheet of the season.
