12 March 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 3 - 3 away draw with Benchill Celtic U9 Warriors (12/03/2011)
After a good win over Alderley United last week the Panthers made the short trip to Wythenshawe to take on Benchill Celtic Warriors. The game was delayed some 20 mins as Benchill arrived late then set up the wrong set of goals.
The pitch itself was quite bobbly and no bigger than a postage stamp. The Panthers were therefore advised to get the ball wide at every possibility.
1st period
The Panthers started with Gabriel in goal Sam and Davy at the back , a midfield three of Jack Marcus, and Ben with Dillan captain for the day alone up front. eagerly waiting to get on were Aidan Archie Ollie and Martin.
The Panthers full of energy before the game started slowly and Benchill had the best of the early exchanges with Gabriel making a smart save from close range. Jack foraging down the left had the first Panthers attempt on goal which was well pushed round by the Benchill keeper. On the other wing Ben was probing and had an attempt which meant narrowly wide, Ben Jack and Marcus all combined well to set Dillan free but he could not beat the keeper.
Benchill had a dangerous number 9 who was causing Sam and Davy problems, getting behind the defence he forced Gabriel into a good save from just under the bar. From the resulting corner though Benchill took the lead when an unmarked attacker headed in from close range.
2nd period
The second period saw the introduction of the 4 subs for Marcus Sam, Davy and Dillan, Ollie and Martin formed the usual defensive pairing and Archie and Aidan were looking to put pressure on the Benchill back line. Hard as they worked though the Panthers struggled to create any clear cut chances.
Benchill continued to press and nearly went further ahead with a shot from distance that rocked the goal frame. The panthers then came close when Martins chip from the left skimmed the crossbar.
The tempo increased and both sides sought the important next goal. Ollie and Ben were strong in the tackle but Benchill were winning most of the 50/50 balls.
The Panthers then drew level. Martin dis possessed the Benchill number 9 and surged forward , continuing his run into the Benchill half he tried a shot from distance that was blocked, The ball fell kindly for him though and he drilled another attempt from 20 yards into the bottom corner to level the scores.
Despite some good passing from Jack Aidan and Archie the Panthers could not create any further chances.
3rd Period
Dillan Davy Marcus and Sam now returned to the action and the pace of the game increased further with each side taking turns to attack, the small pitch made this easy as a throw in or even a goal kick constituted an attempt on goal.
Aidan twice broke through but could not work the Benchill keeper, not dis spirited though he plugged away and following a great run down the right found Davy at the far post, Davy knocked it square for Dillan who was better placed and finished easily from 6 yards to make the score 2-1 to the Panthers.
Benchill continued to press and drew level with a shot from distance that Gabriel got a hand to but could not prevent from crossing the line.
The Panthers quickly went on the offensive and drew ahead again when Davy cooly finished after being played in by Sam. They then had several chances to put the game beyond Benchill , Aidan destined not to score hit the bar from a Marcus corner and Dillan and Aidan through on goal again both fired wide.
Against the run of play Benchill drew level again with another strike from distance which evaded Gabriels despairing dive.
The Panthers nearly sneaked it at the finish firstly Marcus saw a powerful shot just go wide then Davy looked to curl one into the top corner that the Benchill keeper just managed to claw away.
Final Score 3-3
