6 March 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U12 Panthers 5 - 5 away draw with Stockport Eagles U12 (06/03/2011)
A beautiful sunny day provided a perfect setting for the Panthers trip to the table topping Eagles. The Panthers knew that they needed the points if they were to stay in the title race. Within seconds of the kick off, Callum put Jamie through on goal, who finished with aplomb to shock the league leaders out of their sleepy start. The Panthers settled quickly into the game but gradually so did the Eagles, both teams passing the ball around and creating chances. TB, captain in the absence of TC, led the team consisting of Harry between the sticks, George, Neil, Ted and Charlie in defence, Morgan, Joe, Sam, Jamie and TB in midfield and Callum up front. However the defence were soon caught out with a through ball, shouting for an offside decision that didn’t come and the Eagles had pulled level. The Eagles seized the initiative and for a second time the defence were caught out looking for an offside that never came - 2-1 to the Eagles. The Panthers however were not playing badly, Neil, Ted and Charlie looked solid enough in defence, timing challenges well and clearing intelligently while George was battling to deal with the main supply for the Eagles down the right wing. Sam, Joe, Jamie and TB were all combining well with Callum as the team moved forward while Morgan played his defensive role well. After 20 minutes Adam came on for George, Braden for Jamie and Max for Joe. The change however did not have an immediate effect as the Eagles were able to steal in for a third. Gradually the Panthers tried to reassert themselves with Callum thinking he had scored as he followed a ball in, but was judged to have unfairly knocked it out of the keeper’s hands (much to Cal’s surprise as the keeper had dropped it). Adam and Max started to cause trouble down the flanks while Braden slotted into midfield well. Half time soon arrived.
The team were told again about the need to ensure that the midfield track back to win the ball, rather than leaving the defence exposed; while the defence needed to be aware that the offside trap was not going to be as effective in this game, when marginal decisions were not being given. Jamie replaced Callum, Braden moved deeper to allow Joe to replace Morgan, while Sam gave way for George. The Panthers built the pressure but could not score. Morgan replaced Neil, shortly followed by another shift where Max dropped back, Charlie shifted to centre back to enable Sam to replace Ted. This change worked well as Sam put George through who scored his first goal for the team. At 3-2 the Panthers pressed for an equaliser but were undone twice in quick succession as the Eagles quickly moved the scoreboard up to 5-2. However the Panthers would not lie down. George shifted to right back as Neil replaced Charlie and TB was replaced by Ted. The Panthers pressed forward, won a free kick just inside the Eagles half, and Jamie, from wide on the right, curled the ball into the Eagles box and running in Braden finished with ease – 5-3. The Panthers continued to pile the pressure on playing some superb football, twice going close from Jamie’s corners. Then Adam opened up the Eagles defence with one of his tricky runs put the ball through to Sam who looked up and saw Callum, playing a perfect ball in for Callum to round the keeper to score – 5-4. Morgan replaced Braden as the Panthers made the final assault. The Panthers won a corner through more good work down the right as Adam, Jamie and George combined well. Jamie curled it in and Adam finished in style - 5-5. What a comeback! Unfortunately the whistle blew before the Panthers could steal a late winner.
Summary
Once again the Panthers, showed their character and team spirit to fight back to draw in what was an exciting and tense game, where both teams can play very attractive football. Harry played very well in goal and distributed the ball well. The defence most of the time dealt with the Eagles well, where Ted and Charlie performed particularly well. Neil was also very solid. TB performed well as captain both on the wing and at right back where George had a particularly good second half in both midfield and at right back. Morgan showed once again that he is making the defensive midfield role his own while Max also showed his versatility either defending or attacking on the left flank as did Braden, as he played a variety of roles in midfield. Joe, Sam, Adam and Jamie all demonstrated their passing ability and creativity while Callum always looked a threat up front.
Thanks to all the parents, brothers and sisters who braved the Stockport one–way system to ensure the boys got to the game and were warmly supported. Special thanks to Andy and Sam Collicott for their help with the team. And finally thanks to Paul and Alex and his young Eagles for hosting and playing such a good game with a great atmosphere!
