U9 Cougars held at home - Broadheath Hawks fight back to claim a draw

5 March 2011

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 3 - 3 home draw with Broadheath Central U9 Hawks (05/03/2011)

What a start to the weekend............. decent weather; Archer turned up on time and the Cougars looked fantastic in their new training gear!

After weeks of away fixtures it was a pleasure to see the Cougar's backroom staff setting up the goals with such military precision.

As "Scoop" Howgate was still on holiday the reporting duties were once again passed over to the coach........... and after great debut behind the lens last week the action shots were once again assigned to Belinda Archer.

1st Period

Having been pegged back for long periods last week the Cougar's came out firing on all cylinders. The ball was were it should be........... on the floor and being passed well. Lovatt starting probing the Hawks defence with his lovely range of passing from midfield and Ford soon had their defence on the back foot with some great runs down the right.  Archer then popped up wide left; a lovely change of pace left the defender standing with Archer now in full flight. He glanced inside and played an inch perfect pass to Livingston who was charging through from midfield. Livingston controlled with his left and fired home with his right.........1-0. Some more fancy footwork from Ford found him jinking through on the edge of the box; a lovely cross from was then bundled over the line by Mail from short range......2-0.

Broadheath Hawks were trying to push forward, however, they were being well marshalled by Bundred, Lovatt & Stone and the Cougars looked good for their 2-0 lead. After some fine play in midfield it was Livingston's turn to be provider. A lovely though ball found a "snoodless" Mail (he must have inside contacts at a high level within FIFA) on the left hand side of the area. Mail controlled well and fired home with a lovely shot from just inside the box. The Cougars finished the period looking very much in control and good for their 3-0 lead.

2nd Period

The second period started with Cougars still looking on top. Archer again picked the ball up on the left hand side and set Livingston clear only to see his shot well saved by the Hawks keeper. Gozem and Webb were introduced for Mail and Ford and were soon picking up the pace of the game. Lovatt was continuing to pick out some lovely passes from midfield. He picked out Webb wide on the right who then played a lovely pass in to the path of Gozem. Gozem tried to find space in box but was quickly closed down by two defenders. The Hawks then started to get a grip of the game with some fine link up play by their No.7 & No.9. Their No.9 found space in the box only to be tackled well by Bundred. With Bundred still on the ground the ball was deflected against his arm........... the referee blew for a penalty to the disbelief of the home support. The Hawks No. 9 fired the penalty high into the net giving Stone no chance.

Greensmith was introduced for Archer as the Cougars had to re-group having lost out to dubious penalty. The goal seemed to lift the Hawks spirits and they started to find space all over the pitch and pushed forward to the end of the period.

3rd Period

The final period started with the Hawks continuing to apply the pressure. Greensmith was sticking to his task on the left of midfield as was Webb on the right. The Hawks then created two good chances only to be denied by Stone in the Cougar's goal.

The Cougars were now fighting to get back into the game. Another good move down the right by Webb and Lovatt found Gozem in the box. Gozem neatly controlled but fired just over. As the game looked to have settled down The Hawks No. 7 fired a speculative shot from well outside the box which found the roof of the net........3-2. With virtually the next attack they had drawn level and the game, poised at 3-3, seemed to be slipping from the Cougars. Another attack from the Hawks resulted in their No.9 firing in a great shot from the edge of the box.............. in probably the move of the match, the ever consistent Stone moved quickly, dived high to his right and tipped the shot round the post. Inspired by Stone's heroics in net the Cougars the pushed back for the last few minutes of the game and were unlucky not to pinch a winner.

Summary

An thrilling match in which a draw was probably the right result.
