The Cougars lined up against new league leaders Oswald Road for the third time this season. Spirits were high after a fantastic display the previous week where they had inflicted the first defeat of the season on a strong Boothstown side. Despite losing both previous matches against Oswald Road who are undoubtedly the strongest team in the league the Cougars were hopeful as they had performed well in both previous games before conceding late goals. They were without Reece this week meaning no substitutions were available, and were also forced to move to a pitch on higher ground as the normal pitch was virtually under water.
1st Half

The Cougars were determined to start brightly. Will K captain for the day won the toss and after a period of both teams trying to work openings down the wings where the ground was much better the Cougars began to gain in confidence. The defensive line of Luis, Will K Jayden and Jonathan supported by Will N held a steady line and made a number of strong challenges to repel Oswald road attacks , Patrick as always was handling well and was quick off of his line to clear any danger.

The centre of midfield was an absolute mud bath but this seemed to suit Joe who worked hard to win the ball and distribute to Connor Jake and Callum wide. Emmanuel was also getting bogged down in the mud but continued to apply pressure to the Oswald road defense denying them time on the ball.

Oswald Road mounted attack after attack but could not get past the back line and Patrick dealt well with a number of shots from distance.

Connor was enjoying some success down the right and this led to shots from Joe and Jake which were well blocked. The Cougars then applied more pressure and were unlucky not to gain the lead with a number of players just failing to get the final touch to a goalmouth scramble.

The pressure told though when Jake knocked a good ball through the defense for Connor to run onto , He finished well planting the ball beyond the Oswald road keeper into the corner of the net.

Oswald Road then adopted a more direct route to goal and equalized after an attacker ran straight through the middle of the defense shrugging off challenges from Jayden and Jonathan before slipping the ball under an advancing Patrick to level the scores.

2nd Half

With the wind behind them the Cougars started the second half positively Callum and Will K exchanged places down the left and the Cougars attacked down the sides at every opportunity. Oswald Road were also looking dangerous and Patrick made a superb diving save pushing a goal bound effort around for a corner.

The Cougars then came close to extending their lead three times in as many minutes Firstly a strong run and cross by Connor on the right  found Will K whose shot was well blocked. He was then denied again with the keeper saving with his legs after a fine pass from Emmanuel and then for a third time when his header from a corner by Connor was cleared off the line. The Cougars were carving open the Oswald Road defense and with a little more luck could have been a couple of goals ahead.

Oswald Road were clearly rattled and were lucky to not go behind again after yet another goal line scramble where shots from Emmanuel Joe and Jake were all cleared.

Patrick was again called into the action in the dying minutes of what was an exciting end to end encounter. His handling in difficult conditions were absolutely superb as was the determination of the back four in resisting strong pressure.

The whistle finally went with honours even and the Cougars receiving great praise from the opposition management who acknowledged the Cougars had given them their toughest test of the season.

Summary
Another fine performance from the boys who are getting better every week, and seem to relish games against stronger opposition. Not only did the defense perform superbly today but the midfield five tracked back to provide much needed support. With just a little more luck this would have been yet another victory over teams destined for promotion..
 Managers Thoughts
Most exciting and entertaining game we’ve seen this season, and we could easily have won it. The team is gluing together really well and individual performances are brilliant, with everyone honestly deserving MOTM awards. The Cougars are becoming a force to be reckoned with in Division 5 and if we keep this up, we will end the season in a very honorable position. Great result everyone, well done!

Man of the Match
