20 February 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U12 Panthers 5 - 0 home win against Wilmslow Sports JFC U12 Colts (20/02/2011)
Leaden skies and a biting easterly wind provided the environment for the Panthers’ first of two back-to-back derby games against Wilmslow Sports U12 Colts. Both squads were depleted due to the half term holidays, but the Colts more severely than the Panthers.
The Colts kicked off and played some excellent football, causing problems down their right flank early on for the Panthers. But Charlie and Neil marshalled the defence on that side well, and began to neutralise the threat. Charlie - in his enthusiasm to ensure Ross didn’t get past him - gave away an early free kick, but Jamie organised the defence well and the Panthers made sure the Colts didn’t score. Gradually, TC and TB both took control on the right as well, and the defence began to look solid. A bit of excitement occurred when Jamie ran out to claim a loose ball on the edge of the box, and fumbling slightly, managed to handle the ball just over the edge of the box. Once again the defence were well organised and Morgan played his defensive role well in getting the ball clear from the resulting free kick. Going forward, Max started to look threatening on the left flank, while Harry battled hard with TB on the right. Soon the pace of Joe and Shorty started to open up the Colts defence, creating chances for themselves and Braden. But good Colts defensive work and some excellent midfield play from ‘Beanie’ and superb goalkeeping from Kamran ensured that the Colts didn’t let the Panthers through. Gradually the Panthers started to build the pressure but couldn’t break through. Adam and Callum replaced Harry and Braden as the Panthers turned the screw. Eventually a driving run from Shorty parted the Colts’ defence and played Joe in, who broke the deadlock in style, curling the ball high into the corner of the Colts’ net – 1-0. Shorty got a dead leg for his trouble the next time he tried to break through and Harry replaced him while he recovered. Shortly after this the half time whistle blew with the score still at 1-0 to the Panthers.
Following half time, Harry moved to right back and TB took a rest, while Shorty moved back into midfield. The second half began with the Panthers immediately putting the pressure back on, but they couldn’t get the second as they continued to be denied by Kamran. Jamie in the Panthers’ goal was tested from range a few times, and apart from one heart-stopping moment when he mishandled a long range effort (but managed to pounce on it before it crossed the line), he was largely untroubled. However on the occasions when he did get the chance to distribute the ball he did it intelligently, accurately and powerfully. TB replaced Morgan as the Panthers began to turn on the style. TB dribbled through the Colts’ midfield, played a great ball wide to Adam who crossed it into Callum, who finished clinically – 2-0. Harry, TC, Neil and Charlie now started to look impregnable at the back as Braden replaced Max on the left wing. Then Adam broke down the right, skilfully working inside the Colts’ back line, threading the ball into Callum who again finished in style -3-0. Morgan replaced Neil and Max was soon back on for Joe as Braden moved inside again. The Panthers passing game looked even more fluid and penetrating. The ball moved down the left flank with Max leaving the Colts in his wake as he slipped the ball inside for Adam to finish superbly -4-0. Joe replaced Charlie and seamlessly ensured the defence looked as strong as ever, as TC took a well earned rest, Neil taking his place. More excellent play in midfield by TB and Shorty, and solid tackling from Harry gradually sapped the legs out of a now very tired Colts. Shorty picked up the ball in his own half, dribbled past the mesmerised Colts at pace and shot agonisingly wide - much to the anguish of the supporters who were willing it into the net. Charlie replaced Braden and TC replaced Shorty. TC, in a bid not to be outdone by TB, Shorty, Joe, Adam and Max in the dribbling stakes, picked the ball up in his own half, looking for the pass all the time, yet just leaving Colts watching as he weaved his way through them, slipped the ball to TB who put Charlie through to side -foot the fifth – 5-0 to the Panthers and so the game ended.
Summary
An excellent game of football which would have been much closer had the Colts not been so short on numbers. The lads made all of us very proud playing some superb football in very muddy conditions. Jamie kept the Panther’s first clean sheet, shouting instructions and commanding the box well, with the considerable help of a superb defensive display from TC, Neil, TB, Charlie, Morgan, Harry and Joe. The Panthers’ midfield was dominant as Morgan, TB, Shorty, Harry, TC, Braden, Charlie and Joe all shone during their time in those roles. Max, Adam and more briefly Braden and Harry were superb on the flanks while Callum and Braden led the line well. Callum once again was clinical in getting another brace, while Adam, Charlie and Joe all took their chances well. The running with the ball was some of the best I have seen this season and everyone deserves to feel very good about how they performed. The only thing we need to work on from this week is ensuring we put a name on the ball when two players are going for the same ball and not get in each other’s way.
Thanks to Matt Quellin and his parents for helping to create a great atmosphere for the game and well done to Ollie Lane, who refereed the game superbly.
