U9 Panthers show fighting spirit - Just like watching Barcelona!

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 3 - 3 away draw with Alderley United U9 A (19/02/2011)

"What a fantastic game, its just like watching Barcelona" were the words of praise to the rain soaked parents and supporters from the referee during Saturday's clash between the Panthers and Alderley United A.

Perhaps not quite that good but a hugely entertaining game between two evenly matched but very different teams played in boggy conditions at Chorley Hill Lane.

The Panthers travelled to Alderley in good heart despite suffering their first defeat of the season the previous week, in fact the team had not won since November though this is as much down to the atrocious playing conditions the Panthers had encountered in recent weeks as opposed to the far stronger teams that the Panthers have faced since being promoted two divisions. The Panthers were determined though not to abandon their passing game and were wisely advised beforehand to put a little extra on their passes.

The Panthers had enjoyed two great results earlier in the season against Alderley C scoring 15 goals each match without reply. It was obvious straight from the start though that the A team were an entirely different proposition with their squad full of bigger and stronger boys.

1st Period

The team started with Gabriel in goal Martin and Ollie at the back, Ben Jack and Davy in midfield with Dillan alone up front. waiting in reserve were Sam,Aidan, Marcus, and  new big money signing Archie who the Panthers had acquired in the Transfer window from Alderley.

Both teams started sluggishly with the defences having the upper hand, although a friendly both sides were getting stuck in. Like all good defenders there is nothing that Ollie and Martin like more than a bone crunching tackle and they put in lots of full blooded challenges in the first period.

Dillan had the first Panthers attack and Ben the first shot on target which was well blocked. Martin up for a corner had a header cleared and after a good move down the left Davy had a shot that went narrowly wide.

Alderley were attacking more directly and opened the scoring after an attack down the left led to one of their attackers finding himself one on one with Gabriel.

2nd Period

The second period saw the introduction of Marcus,Sam and Aidan for Martin Jack, and Ben . The new line up seemed to lose concentration and an Alderley player ran straight through the defense and scored directly from the kick off.

The Panthers were two goals behind for the first time ever and in cold and wet conditions it would be have been easy for their heads to drop. The Panthers are made of better stuff though and they hit back quickly and played some delightful flowing passing football, none more so than Marcus who seemed to be involved in every move.

As good as the passing was though the moves seemed to break down in the opposition third. Sensing something more direct was required Aidan went on a run that took him past four defenders and through on goal, he poked the ball past the advancing keeper and would have scored a wonderful individual goal but for Dillan popping up and applying a helping touch from a yard out to ensure the ball found the net.

Now only a goal behind , The Panthers had their tails up and went close to the equalizer on several occasions . Davy who had been probing down the right took an excellant long throw which went deep into the Alderley area, Sam running in bravely headed past the oncoming keeper to level the scores.

Back in contention the Panthers introduced new signing Archie in a gleaming white number 25 shirt , it was only white briefly as Archie soon felt the force of the Alderley tackling.

The period ended with the Panthers on the attack and Archie shooting narrowly wide.

3rd Period

The fnal period saw the reintroduction of Ben and Martin. Again the Panthers conceded directly from the kick off, this time their own. Alderley broke down the left and even after challenges from Martin and Sam retained possession. Gabriel whose handling throughout had been excellant got a hand to the shot but the ball again broke unkindly ,and an Alderley attacker following up made the score 3-2

Lifting their heads again the Panthers went about getting back into the game, again the passing of Ben and Marcus was superb and Ben had a couple of powerful attempts from distance which went agonisely wide.

After more good work down the right the ball broke to Marcus on the edge of the area He unleashed a poweful strike which the Alderley keeper could not keep out

The Panthers were level again and could have gone ahead when Archie who had shown some good touches, and had linked well with his new team mates  shot just wide after a great run down the right by Marcus.

The game thus finished with the scores level just as the rain was relenting.

Final Score 3-3

Goals - Dillan,Sam,Marcus

Assists Aidan,Davy

 Summary

A great game against very tough opposition , the boys showed real spirit today in twice coming from behind and great determination in sticking with the passing game which at times Alderley could get nowhere near. Marcus was deservedly  chosen man of the match for a great allround performance.
