After a two week break caused by frosty then waterlogged pitches The Cougars entertained league high flyers Boothstown. In the first of two games against them. They knew therefore as they lined up that they would be in for another tough test, and would need all three points again if they were going to stay in the running for promotion. The steady drizzle turned into rain as the match commenced and was to continue for the duration of the match making playing conditions difficult

1st Half
Joe Captain for the day lost the toss and Boothstown kicked off with the slope and wind in their favour. The Cougars started slowly and were pinned back by wave after wave of attacks, they were keeping their formation well though and Patrick was quick off his line to clear the long through balls.

After 10 minutes the Boothstown pressure told, Luis under pressure knocked a ball back to Patrick who instinctively picked it up conceding a free kick 8 yards out. Despite all the Cougars covering the line Boothstown took the lead when the laid off free kick was fired powerfully into the roof of the net.

Shortly afterwards Boothstown increased their lead when a simple ball through the middle was not cleared and an attacker ran on to finish easily.

Falling two goals behind seemed to wake the Cougars up and at last they got out of their own half. A free kick on the left well delivered by William found Emmanuel who shot wide.

Boothstown were again attacking and won a series of corners with Jake and the William heading to safety, and preventing the cougars falling further behind.

The Cougars were battling for control of the midfield with Reece Joe Will N and Jake all launching into tackles and looking to get the ball wide to Callum and Connor. Jonathan and Jayden had their hands full at the back having to cope with some strong and tricky forwards. It was clear to see why Boothstown were unbeaten all season.

The Cougars then started to take control and worked the ball to the wide areas, one move saw Luis linking well with Connor to clear an attack and get the ball forward wide right to Jake.   Jake released Emmanuel and his run on goal was only thwarted by the Boothstown keeper coming smartly off his line.

The Cougars then won a free kick in the Boothstown area after another back pass was picked up. They could not take advantage though as Connor’s attempt on goal was blocked The Cougars were now in control and won a series of corners which they could not convert despite the ball seeming to bobble around the goal line for what seemed an age.

The pressure eventually told and Jake put Connor through . His cool finish made the score 1-2 and the half time whistle went with the Cougars playing the better football and feeling unlucky to still be trailing.

2nd Half

With the elements in their favour the Cougars started the second half brightly. Callum and William switched positions on the left and the Cougars attacked on both wings. Both Emmanuel and Connor came close to the equalizing goal. The flanks were well provided by the hard work done in the middle by Will N and Reece supported by Joe who was now caked in mud.

Boothstown increased their lead against the run of play with a well taken free kick which Patrick got a hand to but could not keep out. He was now reduced to throwing the ball out having taken a knock in the first half. His throws though were proving the launch pad to Cougars attacks and the defecit was again reduced when William controlled a Connor free kick on the edge of the box and curled a right foot shot past the keeper and in off the post to make the score 2-3

Try as they might the Cougars could not get an equalizer and Boothstown finished the game the stronger scoring twice in the closing minutes to make the final score line somewhat flattering.

Summary
A somewhat strange match played in difficult conditions. The final score line disguising the fact that the Cougars were the better team for large parts of the match . Starting slowly though and losing concentration towards the end cost them dear. Undoubtedly Boothstown are a very strong team and deserving to be towards the top of the league. The Cougars will not be fearing the return fixture next week though and will be confident of gaining something from the match.

Managers Thoughts
Terrible conditions – why does it always rain on us??? We started slowly, something we need to improve on as it can cost us the game – as it did yesterday. We recovered well though and played some really good football, holding positions much better than we have done in the past – great individual performances from Luis, Patrick, Jayden and everyone else against a very good team.  Am looking forward to playing them again next week and reclaim three points!

Man of the Match
A difficult choice this week, with solid performances from most of the boys, but awarded to Reece who was a Tiger ( or a Cougar) in midfield up against opponents twice his size.
