After the previous weeks romp in the rain against Ashton- On- Mersey The Cougars made the long trek to fellow promotion hopefuls Lymm. Lymm were two points ahead but had played a game more than the Cougars and had enjoyed up until now similar results against the other teams in the league. The Cougars were optimistic having put 8 past Ashton. The line up was somewhat depleted though with Luis injured and Will N still suffering from flu. The large pitch and the lack of subs would therefore make the task all the more difficult.

1st Half
Jake captain for the day won the toss and the Cougars kicked off with a 4-4-2 formation with Joe supporting Emmannuel in attack. It was clear straight away that Lymm meant business and they quickly forced two corners. They were well organized from set plays with all the attackers lining up on the edge of the penalty area and peeling off in different directions as the corner was taken. The Cougars defense held firm and Patrick made a number of solid saves as the Vipers pressure increased. The Cougars were trying to use the wings with Jake and Connor working well together on the right and William linking up well with Callum down the left. Reece and Will were battling away in the centre but seemed to be outnumbered by Lymm midfielders. Jayden and Jonathan were solid in central defense though and cleared the attacks in no nonsense fashion. Midway through the first half though the deadlock was broken an attack down the right was not properly cleared and the resulting centre found the Lymm centre forward unmarked 8 yards out he finished easily to give the Vipers the advantage.
The Cougars were finding the going tough and this was not helped by Lymm having a number of available substitutes which they used well.
The Cougars were becoming stretched with large gaps emerging between the back line and the rest of the team, the went close twice though, Emmanuel had a shot well saved and after a good run down the right by Connor his cross was diverted onto a post by a Lymm defender. It was now end to end action and Lymm also hit a post and Patrick who was excellent throughout made more good stops. From one move he launched a kick quickly into the Lymm half giving the Cougars a 3 on 3 situation. Joe worked it wide to Connor who released Emmanuel through the middle. As Always Emmanuel remained composed and leveled the scores poking the ball under the advancing keeper.
Lymm tried to hit back and finished the half the stronger hitting the bar and again being denied by Patrick.

2nd Half
The Cougars regrouped at half time and started the second half brightly, Connor had a couple of strong runs down the wing but there was not much support as Emmanuel Joe and Reece were often way behind the play as they were usually helping out the defense as the ball broke. Lymm forced a series of corners and pushed the Cougars defense back, The Cougars were defending solidly though and William made a great covering tackle when Lymm did break beyond the defense.
Despite coming under increasing pressure it looked for a while as though the Cougars might hold on for a creditable point , luck also seemed to be on their side as Lymm hit the post and bar again and Patrick made a wonderful save keeping out a back header from William.
It was not to be though as tiredness and knocks to a number of players eventually told. a throw in on the right was allowed to go all the way to a Lymm attacker 6 yards out and he finished easily
Cougars heads did not go down though but despite a couple of breakaways by Jake and Connor they could not bridge the gap. Lymm finished the stronger and apart from good work by Callum,Jayden and Jonathan and yet more good saves by Patrick would have increased the margin of victory further.
Final Score 1-2

Summary
A spirited performance against a well organized Lymm team, Injury and tiredness eventually telling and proving the difference between the sides. With home advantage and a full squad to choose from in the return match though the Cougars will fancy their chances though of reversing the score line and keeping in contention for promotion.

Managers Thoughts
It was never going to be an easy match and it proved to be so mainly because of our injuries (Luis and Ata both out of action) and Will Nicol still full of flu, but the team did well and again some good football was played at times, interspersed with weaker moments where the midfield became non-existent and the defense got caught out. We will continue to work on this in training and improve our tactics. Overall you all did us proud, you kept fighting and battling and never gave up, exactly the spirit we need to succeed! With more practice on our shape and tactics, we are strong contenders for promotion – well done everyone!

Man of the Match
An easy choice this week, awarded to Patrick who was outstanding in goal and kept the score line flattering with a number of excellent stops from both the opposition and his own players!
