15 January 2011

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 2 - 2 home draw with Ashton on Mersey JFC U9 (15/01/2011)

After a really good performance against Fletcher Moss where the Panthers narrowly missed holding out for a win  they entertained Ashton on Mersey  who themselves had a long unbeaten run to protect. Back on the narrow Lacey Green pitch the Panthers lined up with the now familiar 2-3-1 formation looking to involve the wide midfield at every opportunity,

The Panthers lined up with Gabriel in goal , Sam and Ollie (capt) at the back, Jack Davy, and Ben in midfield with Aidan alone up front , a strong wind behind them also gave some advantage.

1st Period

Ashton started the brighter and Gabriel was soon forced into a save, Ben initiated the first Panthers attack heading the ball through to Aidan who was crowded out by the Ashton defense. After a period of Ashton pressure the Panthers got their passing game going and started to threaten, Davy looking to get forward and support Aidan fired narrowly wide, Jack also had a shot deflected for a corner, Ben running through had a shot well saved and Davy went close again, before Aidan played Ben through with the Ashton goalkeeper saving smartly from his effort,

At the other end Sam and Ollie were looking really composed up against some tricky forwards and they distributed the ball well when gaining possession, Gabriel was also using the ball well from goal kicks. Despite the end to end action though neither team could break the deadlock

1st period score 0-0

2nd Period

The second period saw the introduction of Martin,Marcus and Dillan for Sam,Ben and Aidan. Ashton soon went on the attack and Martin and Ollie cleared well on a number of occasions. Another attack saw Gabriel diving well low to his left to push a shot round for a corner. From the cleared corner though an Ashton forward managed to cut inside and curl a shot beyond Gabriel to open the scoring.

Not used to trailing the Panthers immediatly tried to hit back , Dillan muscled through the defense and hit a post before the Panthers equalized with another great team move involving several players . From a well worked short kick the ball went to Ollie on the left he played a ball down the line to Jack, his cross found Dillan who controlled and managed to get a shot away which a covering defender could only turn into his own net.

The Panthers continued to press with Dillan and Davy again going close before the period ended with the Panthers again on the attack from which Martin blasted a shot over the bar,

2nd Period score 1-1

3rd Period

The final period saw the return of Ben Sam and Aidan for Davy, Ollie and Jack. Marcus moved to left back and was soon in the action showing his versatility.

Despite a helpful tail wind Ashton put the Panthers under increasing pressure and were awarded a penalty after an attacker who got beyond the defense was bought down by Gabriel . Ashton failed to take the opportunity though with the penalty crashing off the bar and being cleared.

Shortly afterward though Ashton restored their lead when another break saw an Ashton forward slip the ball past an advancing Gabriel.

Again behind the Panthers pressed forward and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, they could not take advantage though as Martin's powerful shot went over the bar.

Despite lots of throw ins deep in Ashton territory the Panthers could not create many chances and it looked as though they were going to finally lose what is the clubs only remaining unbeaten record. This team though has tremendous determination and spirit and were rewarded for their efforts when Martin getting forward from the back headed home a well taken Ben corner to level the scores.

Both teams tried for a late winner with Ashton coming the closest , but the final whistle went with the score 2-2 and honours shared.
