After a break of six weeks the Cougars entertained Oswald Road in the league cup. They had given Oswald road a scare in their previous league meeting coming back strongly and finishing the match the better team. It was obvious the team were raring to go as for once everybody turned up well ahead of the kick off, well everybody apart from the referee ( and the corner flags) anyway . the match eventually kicked off 10 mins late with the corner flags still on the way.

1st Half

It was soon clear that this was going to be another difficult test for the Cougars as Oswald Road enjoyed most of the early possession. The back four though of William,Jayden,Jonathan and Louis were keeping a good line, and with Will Rees and Joe snapping into tackles ahead of them they held Oswald Road at bay well in the early exchanges. Connor and Callum provided someone to aim clearances for on the flanks and Emmanuel was harrying the Oswald Road back line. Oswald Road hit a post early, though it looked as though Patrick had the shot covered. They also forced a series of Corners that the Cougars often struggled to fully clear.

Against the run of play the Cougars broke on the right and Connor played Emmanuel through, he took the ball on to the edge of the area and keeping his composure calmly placed the ball past the keeper into the bottom corner of the net to open the scoring.

Straight from the restart Oswald Road nearly equalized as Patrick slipped in attempting a save but managed to recover before the ball crossed the line.

Despite a lot of pressure the Cougars were defending well until William attempting a clearance sliced the ball across goal it was met by an Oswald road attacker who headed the ball beyond Patrick’s reach for the equalizer.

With the momentum now in their favor Oswald Road continued to pour forward but the defense and the midfield boosted by the introduction of Jake were keeping them at bay with some desperate and strong tackling.

Oswald Road however gained the lead just before half time when a half cleared corner was returned through a mass of defenders past Patrick.

Just before the half time whistle Emmanuel broke through again but could not keep his footing when preparing to shoot.

HT score 1-2

2nd Half

The opening exchanges of the second half were fairly even, callum broke away on the left but could not get a shot away when past the defense. Then came a period of about 5 minutes where the Cougars seemed to lose their shape and concentration a break on the left led to Oswald Road’s 3rd goal and then a similar break on the right to their 4th. Then from a corner the ball was allowed to go all the way to the far post without an attempt to clear, it was dispatched easily from close range to make the score 5-1 to Oswald Road.

The Cougars then seemed to wake up and went about reducing the defecit. Connor made several good runs down the right linking well with Jake. Louis and Callum were also probing down the left side. Rees was having a good game in the middle getting stuck into challenges against far bigger opponents as were Joe and Jayden, and Will N was looking to get the ball wide at every opportunity.

After several attacks Emmanuel managed to wriggle his way through the defense and hit a shot that beat the keeper and just had enough power to trickle over the line to make the score 2-5

He was then put through again from a superb 40yard ball from the back by William but this time he could not beat the Oswald Road keeper.

Throwing players forward the Cougars again finished the match the stronger team Jonathan had a shot from range well saved and Connor also came close, but it was a case of too little to late and the final whistle went with the cougars again on the attack.

Final Score 2-5

Summary
Although the Cougars again rallied well this was a disappointing performance with the match being lost because of a sloppy 5 minute spell at the start of the second half. The boys need to learn to keep their concentration and shape throughout the whole of the game, and not just start to play as they can after going behind. Nevertheless there were a number of very good performances and the Cougars can now concentrate on making a challenge for promotion.

Managers Thoughts

Such a long break of training and games was never going to do us any good and we were definitely a bit rusty (including the coaches), but at times we played some excellent football and are undoubtedly a match for Oswald. We need to concentrate on starting the game well, it takes us far too long to settle and we often end up chasing rather than leading the game. Communication is still an issue, with the result that we don’t use the space we have and end up crowding round the ball. Nevertheless, some excellent individual performances, now we need to work on gelling these into a team performance, something we have shown we can do in the past and we can do again. Out of the cup, yes, but now we need to concentrate on the league – we can definitely contend for promotion but only if we work hard at it – see you at training on Friday!

Man of the Match
Awarded to Emmanuel for a very good solo performance up front always looking dangerous and very composed when in front of goal.
