U10 Panthers cant shake off the winter blues - Wilmslow struggle in first game of 2011

10 January 2011

Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 0 - 3 home defeat to Wythenshawe Amateurs JFC U10 Leopards (08/01/2011)

When Wythenshawe kicked off this first match of 2011 and Calum immediately intercepted the first pass and forced an early save from the Wythenshawe keeper, it looked as if the 4 week rest might have done the Panthers good.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Wythenshawe after that early lapse of concentration, took control of the first period and Sam H was quickly in the action making a goal line clearance to keep the game goalless. The ball though went directly to a Wythenshawe player who hit it straight back, forcing Tom into the first of 3 great saves.

Wilmslow did manage a couple of forays into the Wythenshawe area, the first a great run down the left and a good cross by Sam H was intercepted well by the keeper and some good skill in the area from Calum and Scott resulted in shots going just wide.

The pressure was starting to build though as Wythenshawe passed well through midfield and a cross was well saved by Tom at the top left corner as the ball started to drift goalward. Wilmslow just couldn’t get their passing going on a very heavy pitch and soon it was Wythenshawe again who broke away downfield. This time Tom saving in a one on one with the Wythenshawe attacker.

Inevitably, the pressure told, and another good move into the Wilmslow half had a loose ball fall to an unmarked Wythenshawe forward who smashed the ball home.

The Panthers came into the game more in the second period and came close to equalising on a couple of occasions, although early on Sam D had to make a very important well timed last man tackle to keep the score a 1-0.

The first came from a good shot from Scott after a Wythenshawe goalmouth scramble resulted from a corner by Calum, and then Joel headed just wide after a great run down the left and a cross from Sam H.

The Panthers looked to be getting some of their rhythm going in this period and a good cross from Joel was just to quick for Ben to run on to.

(Second 15 minute period Wilmslow Town 0 – Wythenshawe 1)

Wythenshawe kicked off the final third, but this time they managed to thread their way unhindered through the Panthers defence and an unmarked forward scored the softest of goals to make it 2-0.

With nothing to lose now the Panthers tried to retrieve the game, but although there was plenty of effort, they just couldn’t make the breakthrough.

Sam H had a couple of his long range thunderbolts, but both were wide. Scott hit the side netting after some good interplay with Will.

The attempts by the Panthers to score left them stretched at the back and eventually Wythenshawe were finally able to take advantage of this, winning the ball in defence and breaking away to score a third past a helpless Tom.

Final score 6-1
