U9 Jaguars back in business against undefeated Unicorn Vikings - a great performance not quite enough.

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Jaguars 1 - 3 home defeat to Unicorn Athletic JFC U9 Vikings (08/01/2011)

The Jaguars turned up at Lacey Green after the long winter break, to face an undefeated Unicorn Vikings 'A'  team.  The first period saw  Freddie in goals, Harrison and Jack at the back,  Connor in the middle, Dante and Max on the wings and Matt up front. The team played with a great deal of skill and determination. Max slotted into his new roll on the left and saw a lot more of the ball as the manager's hoped. Matt scored a great goal and the boys went into the break with a deserved lead. Jack and Harrison marked the Unicorn Striker out of the game and Connor stamped his authority in midfield with another fine display.

In the second period Joel, Cameron, Will, Joe and Ollie came on. Unicorn made some changes and pushed forward with a good deal of pace and showed why they are unbeaten in Division A. They scored a couple of quality goals to go 2-1 up. Despite this, all the Jaguars performed very well. Cameron was everywhere tackling and passing. A special mention goes to Will. The Jaguars need to make the most of his phenomenal speed in the future but his tackling also came to the managers' attention. Joel toughed it out at the back, Joe worked very hard out on the left and Ollie was a handfull for the Unicorn defence.

In the third period the return of Harrison, Connor, Dante, Max and Matt saw a period of great football from both teams. The link play between Matt and the two wingers was fantastic to watch. Unfortunately Unicorn got a breakaway goal, which sealed the game, but the Jaguars came close on half a dozen occasions. Harrison blasted a shot from a distance but it just crept past the post. Goalkeeper Freddie played with confidence. He was not at fault for any of the Unicorn goals. Well-done Freddie! The final score 3-1 to Unicorn Vikings.

The match was played in a wonderful spirit between two talented teams.  The only free kick was for a handball. We should remember Unicorn Vikings defeated our own Cougars team 7-1 and beat the almost legendary Sale United (undefeated for 2 years). The Jaguars deserved to come away with something from the game and maybe we did. The team spirit has returned along with our trademark entertaining football. The managers would like to thank the boys for their performance and for making them smile again.

A word now on our man of the match. Dante Luca played on his favourite right wing. He played well throughout the game but in the final third he put in his best performance so far this season. His skill has never been in doubt but today everything came together to show what a terrific player he is. His link play with Matt and Max is key to the future success of the Jaguars. This award is long overdue but if he continues to play in the same way then the Jaguars will return to winning ways and Dante Luca will collect many more man of the match awards.
