8 January 2011 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 2 - 2 away draw with Fletcher Moss Rangers JFC U9 (08/01/2011)
Venue Mersey Bank Playing Fields KO 11.00am
After a lengthy break the Panthers travelled to Didsbury to take on Fletcher Moss Rangers Colts , The large pitch was in remarkedly good condition given the recent weather and the players and supporters were eagerly looking forward to the restart of the season.
The starting line up was Gabriel in goal, Oliver and Martin (captain for the day) at the back, a midfield three of Ben wide right Jack wide left and Sam central, leaving Marcus alone up front.
1st period
It was clear from the start that Fletcher Moss were going to provide a tough test and the Panthers looked a little rusty but tried to get their passing game going.Ben was linking up well on the right with Martin and had a good run down the wing but could not find a colleague with his cross. Ollie and Jack were also combining well on the left from one of Jack's dangerous crosses Sam fired narrowly wide. Gabriel was called into action early and made a good save from a Fletcher Moss attack. Marcus in a lone front role was causing the opposition problems and had a good run and cross across the face of goal which nobody could apply the finishing touch to.
The deadlock was eventually broken when after a Panthers corner the ball returned to Jack on the right, his fine cross was met by Sam who steered it past the Fletcher Moss keeper to open the scoring. This set back galvinised Fletcher Moss who laid seige to the Panthers goal. They managed to equalize after a corner was only half cleared and the ball returned back into the penalty area found a Fletcher Moss attacker unmarked a few yards out. He poked the ball past Gabriel to make the score 1-1
2nd Period
The second period saw the introduction of Davy,Dillan, and Aidan for Ollie,Jack, and Sam. The Panthers soon restored their advantage with the best move of the game. Marcus picked up the ball in midfield and played a great ball through the defense for Aidan to run onto, his cross was met at the near post by Dillan who flicked it first time past the keeper to make the score 2-1, Fletcher Moss went on the attack again forcing a number of Corners on the right. The Panthers soaked up the pressure well and Gabriel made a great double save. The Panthers were unlucky not to extend their lead when a corner on the right was cleared to the edge of the area, it was picked up by Ben who looped a shot over the keeper, the ball unfortunatley struck the post and rebounded to safety.
3rd Period
The final period saw the return of Ollie,Jack and Sam for Martin,Ben and Marcus. Apart from the odd break it was now all Fletcher Moss with Ollie and Sam at the back often having to cope with 4 or 5 attackers. Gabriel was in fine form making a number of good saves as the Panthers struggled to clear their lines. It looked as though we had luck on our side as well with Ollie managing to clear a shot that hit the post and ran agonisely along the goal line.
Just before the end though the pressure eventually told, a goal kick from Gabriel was met by an attacker who hit a fierce shot goalwards, Gabriiel just managed to get across and get a hand to the shot, the rebound however fell to another Fletcher Moss player who steered the ball into an empty net to level the scores.
Summary
A really tough test for the Panthers after a long break, they probably had to defend more in this match than they have done in any previous match and at times the back line were heavily outnumbered. A draw was probably a fair result despite leading for so long. At times though the passing was a delight to watch and the Panthers are sure to return to winning ways soon if continuing in this fashion.
