Not quite a perfect 10 but Panthers remain unbeaten! - First game in the new division

20 November 2010

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 3 - 3 home draw with Timperley Villa JFC U9 Pythons (20/11/2010)

After a perfect record in Division D and good result against Urmston Meadowside Vikings (a Division B side) in a friendly the previous week, the Panthers were promoted two divisions and lined up for their first  Division B test against Timperley Villa Pythons. The boys appeared slightly nervous before the start but were keen to show that their promotion to the higher levels of the Timperley league was fully justified.

The Panthers welcomed back Sam this week, and had a full squad to select from.

The team started off with Gabriel in Goal a back two of Davy and Martin  A midfield three with Ben wide right, Jack wide left and Sam who was captain for the day in the middle, with Dillan alone up front.

Ist Period

The game started slowly with each team trying to gain control, it was immediately apparent that this was going to be a far harder test than any the Panthers had faced before. Timperley were big and strong and tackled hard, they also closed down well and the Panthers as a result were finding it hard to get their passing game going.

The first chance fell to the Panthers and their keeper made a good save turning a shot from Sam round for a corner. Sam then went close again moments later just firing wide. Dillan them broke through but again their keeper palmed his effort away for a corner from which Sam shot over.

The Pythons were looking dangerous too and Davy and Martin needed to be at their best to repel their attacks. Jack and Ben were providing able support down the flanks as well.

The deadlock was then broken when a good move down the right found the ball arriving to Ben on the far touch line. He looked up and found Sam running in with a fine cross. Sam finished well to make the score 1-0 to the Panthers.

The Pythons then began to attack in numbers and Gabriel twice made great saves from shots outside the box.

2nd Period

The second period saw a number of positional changes Martin & Ollie now formed the back line Marcus and Aidan joined the action in midfield Dillan. Sam was alone in attack.

The Pythons immediately laid siege to the Panthers goal and Gabriel was again tested with some powerful shooting. After a number of attempts the Pythons grip on the game told and they equalized after the Panthers defense failed to clear an attack.

On the counter Dillan fired narrowly wide with a fantastic shot from some rangem showing his attacking awareness. The Panthers attacks were being quickly closed down though and we were again denied time on the ball to get our passing game going.

The Pythons then took the lead in unfortunate circumstances. An attack on the right led to a shot on goal. Sam in attempting to stop the ball hitting his face raised his hands and the referee blew for a penalty.

Despite Gabriels brave effort to save, the ball found the bottom corner of the net to make the score 2-1 to the Pythons, This was the first time this season that the Panthers had fallen behind, but to their credit they immediately went on the attack looking for the equalizer.

The pressure eventually told when Aidan, wearing a borrowed pair of boots, got a foot to an attempted clearance, with the ball deflecting past the Pythons keeper and making the score 2-2.

Second period score 2-2

3rd Period

The final third saw Ben, Davy and Jack return to the action.

Marcus just shot wide before launching himself into a 50- 50 tackle and coming off worse and having to leave the field injured. Martin came on at the back and Davy pushed forward into midfield.

The Panthers were now defending deep, too deep in fact and this allowed a shot which Gabriel for once could not hold and the Pythons scored from the follow up making the score 3-2

Again the panthers showed their spirit and went about looking for the second equalizer. The Pythons were defending in numbers and despite a series of corners the break would not come and it looked as though the Panthers were going to taste defeat for the first time.

Just before the end though the perseverance paid off and the ball broke to Jack on the left, he kept his composure and finished well making the score 3-3.

Summary

A great performance from the Panthers against a very strong Timperley team. Although the perfect record has been broken the Panthers remain unbeaten after twice coming from behind. It is obviously going to be much harder going forward following promotion to Dvision B but the boys will continue to do well if playing in such determined fashion.

Man of the Match
