After last weeks nail biting come back victory against AFC Partington The Cougars traveled to Chorlton Park to take on Oswald Road. Oswald Road were top of the league with a perfect record and a healthy goal difference.
The Cougars knew an improvement on previous performances was required if they were to sustain their push for promotion. As they were also due to face the same team in a return match the following week and then again in the cup after that it was important to put on a good show and continue the steady improvement shown over the previous matches. The squad was also weakened by the continued absence of Atakan through injury.
With only 9 Cougars ready to play 5 minutes before the start there was widespread relief to see Emmanuel appear as the referee was calling the teams together. We still only had 10 to start though with Luis and Reece absent
The starting ten was Patrick in Goal, a back four of William and Jake at full backs , with Jayden and Jonathan central, a midfield four this week of Callum wide left Connor wide right, Joe central with Will playing as holding midfield. This left Emmanuel up front, omens did not look good, it would have been hard enough with 11 players let alone 10

1st Half
Despite being at a numerical disadvantage the Cougars started brightly and the back four held the line well. The plan was to absorb the pressure and to try to get the ball to Emmanuel on the break. It was soon clear why Oswald road were league leaders and unbeaten, they had a couple of lively forwards and a player in midfield that moved the ball around well and instigated all of their attacks. Although they quickly established dominance in midfield the back four supported by Will and Joe were keeping the opposition at bay and Patrick was quick off his line to deal with balls played beyond the defense.
Callum had a good run down the left and then Connor one down the right , although Oswald Road looked very good going forward they appeared a little suspect at the back and this gave the Cougars hope.
Another run down the right saw Connor find Emmanuel on the edge of the box, his stubbed shot crept in via the far post to give the Cougars a surprise lead. Also at this time although Will N was off the pitch receiving treatment the numbers were boosted with Luis arriving ,he went to right back allowing Jake to move into midfield.
The Cougars were unable to capitalize on their advantage though and successive Oswald Road attacks pushed the Cougars rearguard slowly back towards their own goal.
From a corner the defense seemed to freeze and an Oswald Road attacker found himself free a few yards from goal and finished easily to level the scores.
Oswald Road continued to pressure and gained the lead after an attacker had run beyond the defense his shot hit the post but was followed up by another attacker to make the score 1-2
The tackles were flying in in midfield and Joe became the latest to have to leave the field injured.
Just before the break Oswald road increased their lead with a good finish on the left after a ball behind the defense,
HT score 1-3

2nd Half
Although two goals behind the Cougars were not discouraged, they were generally containing Oswald Road well and looking dangerous going forward. They were reminded that this game was certainly not beyond them.
The Cougars started the second half the stronger. William and Luis worked the ball forward well from the wide positions and Jonathan ably assisted by Jayden moved the ball forward well from Central positions and kept shackles on the dangerous Oswald Road forwards.
The midfield and forwards were for once not getting caught offside and looked to have the legs of the Oswald Road back four. Will K put Jake through with a good long ball only for the keeper to save well. Jake then through again fired narrowly wide.
On the break Oswald Road extended their lead when a move down the right was not cleared and an attacker poked the cross beyond Patricks reach.
It was now all Cougars though and despite another injury this time to Callum the Cougars pressed forward in numbers and looked the better team Jake through again beat the keeper but could only hit the post , Connor following up though finished well to make the score 2-4
The final minutes saw relentless Cougars pressure they were in control at the back and got the ball forward quickly , We could not further reduce the defecit though but certainly finished the game the stronger team.
Final Score 2-4

Summary
The best performance of the season against a very good Oswald Road team . The Cougars though beaten put in a spirited showing and Oswald Road will certainly not be looking forward to the return matches. If we can match them in midfield and continue to play to our strengths going forward the future encounters will be very close.

Managers Thoughts
First of all, apologies to the parents and Emanuel for getting so irate about late arrivals – although I do believe all players should get to the game in time for a proper warm up and AT LEAST be there for kick-off!!! Leaving this behind us now, I can only compliment the team on their performance and especially spirit and determination against what is a very very good team. The result could easily have been different and I believe we were actually unlucky at certain moments of the game. All in all, to me the result was irrelevant – each one of you improves with every single game they play and no-one could have asked more from you – I am already looking forward to hosting Oswald on home turf next week to show them again what a tough competitor they have in the WT U12 Cougars! WELL DONE TEAM!!!!
