After a difficult week - the U11 Panthers come good

The U11 Panthers followed last weekend's disappointing performance against Urmston with a clinical ten-goal away victory over Ashton on Mersey. Playing without two of the squad's leading lights, Wilmslow took the game to their opponents from the first minute and had racked-up a 7-0 lead by half time. The Panther's passing, movement and discipline was very impressive - leaving the managers wondering whether they had trained with the same players midweek?

Changes were made shortly before half-time and throughout the second period, giving some of the Wilmslow defence an opportunity to play a little further up the field. Three goals were added to the score and, significantly, the Panthers finished the game with the first clean sheet of the season. This was thanks in part to three great saves from Henners and responsible performances from the back three.

Ashton looked well beaten after 30 minutes but fought back admirably in the second half, defending resolutely and creating a handful of scoring chances.

The passing and support play was so good today that there were a number of contenders for the MOTM awards. Every member of the squad played their part and the gongs ultimately went to those who created and assisted as opposed to those that got on the score sheet. Bronze went to Rohan for yet another unselfish and confident performance playing in a variety of positions; Silver to Greg for underpinning the defensive back line in a situation where goal fever has previously taken hold and Gold to Dan for an almost faultless display that included a goal and - more importantly - five assists.

The Panthers return to Sale next weekend for a repeat fixture, this time in the League Cup. Despite this morning's convincing victory, the boys will need to regain their focus for the cup encounter to ensure that they progress.
