After a two week break the Cougars were keen to get back into action and were looking for all three points from a visit to bottom of the table St Johns Celtic.

The starting eleven was Patrick in Goal, a back four of William and Jake at full backs , with Atakan and Jonathan central, a midfield five this week of Callum wide left Connor wide right and Reece/Joe central with Will playing as holding midfield. This left Jayden up front, As kick off approached there was still no sign of leading scorer Emmanuel, though a number of others (including the manager) had had difficulty in finding the venue with the pitch then being a good distance from the car park.

1st Half

The Cougars started slowly with some of the team finding it difficult to adapt to the new formation.
The midfield area was crowded and it was difficult for both teams to create any positive moves. Gradually the Cougars determination saw them gain the upper hand.   Joe and Reece despite being up against bigger opponents fought for every loose ball and Will N sitting in front of the back four looked to play the ball wide.

Jake and Will K in new full back roles designed to give them more opportunity to push forward took this chance with each of them making powerful runs down the wings and they linked well with Callum and Connor ahead of them.

The first chance fell to Jayden, he could not beat the keeper though when put through.

Despite the pitch being fairly small the usual gaps between attack and defense began to emerge and the Cougars were again frustratingly caught offside on a number of occasions. This was totally unnecessary as they looked to have the beating of the St Johns back line.

Callum then appeared to have opened the scoring with a fine shot from the edge of the box that went in off the post. The celebrations were premature though as the referee had blown for another offside.

Against the run of play St Johns took the lead. The Cougars were caught trying to dribble out of defense and the St Johns attacker curled in a wonderful shot from the edge of the box which went into the top right hand corner of the goal past Patricks despairing dive.

Spurred on by this reversal the Cougars went about securing an equalizer and created a number of openings. They looked to have won a penalty when a St Johns defender handled in the box with the open goal begging the referee waved play on but neither Jayden or Joe could get the finishing touch.

Jayden then looked to have the goal at his mercy but although he beat the keeper his effort was cleared off the line by a defender.

Just before half time the figure of Emmanuel was spied on the horizon making the long trek from car park to pitch. Buoyed by this the Cougars pressed on and won a free kick 25 yards out. Connors shot on goal found the net with the assistance of a defenders hand. The referee this time signaled a goal much to the Cougars delight.

2nd Half

Encouraged by their strong fight back the Cougars started the second half brightly, they maintained their 4-4-2 line up with Emmanuel replacing Jayden in attack..

Emmanuel has a knack of wriggling past defenders and he did just that at the start of the second half running on to finish well and give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage.

With their noses now in front the boys visibly increased in confidence and pushed forward in search of further goals. At this stage Jake got a ball full in the face and had to leave the field Atakan moved to right back and Jayden into defense alongside Jonathan.

Emmanuel played a ball through for Connor who increased the Cougars advantage with a powerful shot high into the St Johns net. Will K then played in Callum on the right he ran through and finished well to make the score 4-1

The Cougars were now in full flow , Jake returned to the action on the right wing and his first contribution was to head in a Connor corner at the far post to make the score 5-1

Connor then broke through the defense again and another high and powerful shot completed his hat trick making the score 6-1

St Johns though continued to counter attack and Patrick made a couple of saves from long range attempts.

Jake looking lively on the right then cut in and fired a powerful shot past the keeper to make the score 7-1 . The St Johns defense was now wilting under the pressure and Callum and  Reece both had chances to increase the score line but fired wide each time when through on goal.

With the game coming to an end Will N won the ball on the edge of the area and found Will K breaking forward quickly in the middle . William carried the ball from within his own half sprinting clear of the St Johns defense. With Reece Connor and Emmanuel available in support he powered on into the penalty area and drilled a low shot past the St Johns Keeper to complete the scoring in emphatic style.

Summary
After a poor first half the Cougars probably played their best football of the season and with a little more composure in front of goal could have won by a greater margin. With an additional goal threat now coming from our attacking full backs the Cougars are well positioned as we approach the half way point of the season. If we can eradicate our known faults (offside and tracking back) we should be able to launch a promotion attempt. We still have the leading teams to play but it is already clear that the team has greatly improved since the start of the season.

Managers Thoughts

After last week’s catastrophic friendly against the U11’s, we decided it was time to put some rules in place to ensure we win games rather than give them away – this resulted in the boys being briefed on their assigned individual positions at training on Friday night so everyone knows what is expected of them during the game on Sunday. And boy,did that work! After a slow start and some hair raising moments the team got going in earnest and played some of the best football they’ve played this season.   We now need to keep this momentum going and concentrate on our weaker points during training and on match days – OFFSIDES are really a waste of a good chance and we should not get caught out so often. We will practice on this during training. All round, an excellent performance and result – WELL DONE COUGARS!!!!

Man of the Match

A really close call this week with a number of boys having their best game of the season. Awarded to Will Kennedy for a solid display at left back capped with a fine individual goal.
