7 November 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U12 Panthers 6 - 1 home win against Urmston Town JFC U12 (A) (07/11/2010)
After a prolonged break from football the boys were keen to get into the match, so the slight delay to the start left them all even more eager to get on with it. The pitch was in great condition for the time of year while the weather was fine, albeit a little cloudy. The team lined up with Nathan, Shorty, TB, Neil, Teddy, Charlie, George, TC, Braden, Adam and Joe eagerly anticipating the game.
The game started with both teams appearing a little nervous and the play was therefore a bit skittish before the teams settled down. The ball headed towards the Panthers’ end of the pitch initially, flying high, which Nathan comfortably came out to collect. In the opening few minutes the teams crowded out the midfield as they battled for possession. Then, out of nowhere, Shorty weaved his way up-field with a great solo effort, beating several defenders before heading for a one on one with the keeper, coolly side-footing it across him slotting into the corner the net, 1-0 to the Panthers.
The boys began to settle and showed more of the passing and moving game they had demonstrated in training on Friday night, George and TB combining well with some fluid passing moves. Teddy and TB also worked well together in defending a Puma’s break, after some initial discussions of who would get the ball – good communication is crucial when there is a ball that either one of you could win – thankfully they worked it out but even at the highest level this can cause problems as was seen during Sunday’s Liverpool - Chelsea match.... At the other end of the pitch Braden was chasing the ball down in the box – even when keeper almost had the ball, Braden was following it in, great to see!
Nathan came out for a good catch as Urmston attacked, but uncharacteristically, couldn’t hold the ball and it escaped into the path of an oncoming Urmston player who gratefully shot on goal - but TC had anticipated this and cleared the ball off the line – a narrow escape for the Panthers! Nathan fired the ball up-field and the Panthers pushed forward again, only to be caught offside. The resulting free kick enabled Urmston to launch another attack, but Charlie was there to stop it in its tracks, tackling and confidently clearing the ball out of the Panthers’ end of the pitch. Shorty and Braden were the next to combine in some nice moves, Braden neatly chipping the ball over the head of an Urmston player for Shorty to run onto but the move broke down. Charlie was back on the ball again as it headed once again towards the Panthers box, battling his way down the line, terrier like in his tenacity, ensuring the Pumas weren’t able to maximise their opportunity. It wasn’t long after this that Shorty was injured in a tackle and had to go off for a very sore ankle to have time to recover, so Callum took to the field in his place.
The next goal scored was courtesy of the Urmston defence as the ball bounced around the box and, after a deflection, Joe converted it to score, the ball flying into the net, 2-0 to the Panthers. The Pumas tried to get back into the game but Neil, TC and Callum combined with some fluid passing, moving the ball around the pitch and away from the Urmston forwards, frustrating their attack. A subsequent Urmston attack saw the ball loose in the box which Nathan was easily able to collect once again, sending it up field with his goal kick. Unfortunately the Panthers were unable to capitalise on the kick and Urmston quickly gained possession and were able to have a shot on goal, with Nathan caught out off his line, however TB was there to clear the shot off the line and save the day. A follow on attack by the Panthers was saved by the Pumas goalie as he fell on the ball, as their midfield got an ear bashing from the touchline....
The substitutions that followed caused a little confusion, as George was called off the pitch too early leaving the team a man down. Fortunately it was quickly resolved, allowing Max, Jamie, Harry and TJ to come on as Braden, TC, Charlie and Neil left the field.
Joe and TJ joined up well with some great moves, while Max was called upon to make some timely challenges and clearances in quick succession. Nathan was kept busy as the defence put him to good use helping to neutralise Urmston attacks, as the defence showed their increasing confidence to pass their way out of trouble. George’s increasingly long throw ins continue to be a great help in getting the ball up the wings, but the large number of throw ins on both sides were a signal that Urmston were having a better spell at this point in the game. TB and Teddy’s deft defensive heading and cool interceptions and tackles, combined with TC’s calm ability to win and clear the ball intelligently and Nathan fearlessly running out for the ball were essential in keeping the defensive sheet clean during the first half! Jamie had a long range shot on goal, following a through ball from Joe, which went just wide - the first dangerous looking attack the Panthers had had for a while. This was followed up by another Panthers’ attack as George struck a great looping cross into the box and the Pumas goalie was forced to fall on the ball to prevent the Panthers scoring again. Harry, TJ, TB and TJ were all combining well with some good passing moves as the game progressed, and Harry showed his love for the tackle as he continually won the ball off the Urmston attack. The Pumas had last attack of the half, but the shot was directly at Nathan, giving him an easy catch. The half ended at 2-0.
Second half
Urmston started well after the break with some early pressure, however the Panthers responded and the game became very evenly balanced. Joe and Adam were combining well to win the ball, recycling it back Max, who with a fine volley, sent the ball soaring back up field to the Pumas end of the pitch. There was much battling in midfield (some of it even between Panthers! We need to put a name on the ball more often) but eventually Adam and George worked the ball through Jamie who put Callum through, who didn’t waste the opportunity, scoring the third Panthers goal with aplomb. 3-0 to the Panthers!
An Urmston corner saw Nathan in fine voice organising the team for the corner, as it seemed they had forgotten a few things, but Nathan soon put them right.... However, after all the build up, the corner went straight behind the goal, but the team were well prepared for it should it have been delivered well. Urmston were soon back at Nathan with another shot, however it didn’t trouble him as it went wide and behind the goal. The Panthers won a corner, taken by Jamie, who whipped it into the box for Charlie, who rose above the Urmston defence to deliver a powerful header, but it went just wide of the goal.
Shorty, Braden, TC, Neil and Charlie came back ‘off the bench’ as George, Adam, Ted, TB and Joe made way for them. Max was now really making his presence felt up and down the left hand side of the pitch at this point in the match – at one point acting as provider for Braden in attack then back in defence seemingly seconds later, working with Neil to clear the ball up field. Nathan’s next goal kick bounced around midfield for a few seconds before Callum, spotting the Puma’s goalie was well off his line, put a rocket of a half volley from 35 yards, over the despairing keeper’s arms to drop into the back of the net from a great height, 4-0 to the Panthers!
The Panthers continued to battle as Charlie and Jamie got stuck into a newly determined Urmston, who sensing the game was now slipping away from them for sure, were making another attempt to get back in the game. However the Panthers passing game ensured they remained dominant. Charlie showed his increasing prowess in the air as he seemed to get his head everything, as Urmston cleared the ball in the air with increasing frequency, only to find it coming straight back at them off Charlie’s head. Jamie, Braden, Callum, Sam and Neil combined well until TC put the last pass in to Braden, whose shot on was more delicate than usual but the ball trickled agonisingly slowly towards the bottom corner of the net - almost in slow motion – everyone held their breath as the ball finally crossed the line making it 5-0 to the Panthers.
After kick off, Nathan had a couple of shots to deal with, but they were relatively ineffective until, following what was one of the Panthers’ very few defensive lapses, a well taken shot from one of the Urmston players from just inside the box flew into the top of the net, beyond Nathan’s reach. It just goes to show you can’t relax for a minute as the opposition are just waiting to capitalise on it! 5-1 and first clean sheet blown!
Shorty made a break down the wing, flying past a number of defenders, crossed through to Charlie, who had a shot which went wide, however this was a great effort as Charlie was running at speed when he took the shot and it was not far away. Braden was the next to put a great cross in the box, after some great battling with the Urmston defence, but it ended up in the side netting rather than the back of the net. Max and Neil were busy making a number of clearances, Max showed his growing coolness under pressure, taking his time as he continually lost pressing attackers then calmly putting the ball either out of play or up field. While Harry was as determined as ever, throwing himself into his tackles and headers, a notable one ending up with him flat on his back doing a good impression of a turtle in the process... Jamie had another chance of a shot on goal and was about to pull the trigger as the whistle blew for offside, so his shot flew off the crossbar as a result. A goal kick from Urmston ended back with Jamie, who whipped his cross in for Charlie to get on the end of, which he did, however he couldn’t convert the opportunity into a goal. Neil was next to send in a cross, as Harry first, then Charlie got a head on it, but still the ball wouldn’t go in the net. A corner to the Panthers was given, and again Jamie whipped it in as Charlie once again put in a towering header, but this time fortune was with him as the ball flew into the back of the net. 6-1 to the Panthers!
Manager’s comments.
In my opinion this was the best all round performance from the team this season, as it was sustained for the whole hour of the game. Nathan was at his vocal best commanding his box with authority while also enjoying himself more than in recent weeks. Harry showed great tackling, heading and passing as well as beginning to show better positional awareness. Max continued to develop his cool, skilful approach to defending while his distribution becomes increasingly effective. Teddy is becoming a commanding presence in defence with great timing, positional awareness and control. Neil showed what an excellent defensive midfielder he can be, influencing the game tremendously. TC showed his skill and defensive intelligence as he organised the defence with Ted and Max, playing his captain’s role to the full and also managing to get an excellent assist. Shorty showed his great versatility in playing excellently in midfield and at wing back, scoring a cracking goal. Adam showed what a tricky striker he is for defences to deal with, while Jamie continued to put more steely determination into his game as well as demonstrating slick, accurate passing as well as very dangerous corners. George continued to develop his ability on the right flank showing increasing defensive ability as well as causing havoc going forward. TB relished a chance to play in central midfield showing his determination, skill, increasing willingness to head the ball as well as passing more while still dribbling devastatingly. TJ had his best game of the season linking play, tracking back and ensuring the Panthers were very hard to break down in midfield. Joe showed great skill and pace that can devastate the opposition that seems to get better each week, yet another great goal too.
GBK Man of the Match: Charlie
Dream Team results: Gold: Charlie for a superb all round performance, timely tackles and challenges, great determination to win the ball again and again, heading the ball more than ever and with great power and technique, scoring a very well deserved goal with one of the best headers I’ve seen from any of the boys.
Silver: Callum continues to develop his team play as well as becoming more clinical in his finishing at the same time as tracking back more often. Two excellent but very different goals today
Bronze: Braden continued to show what unbelievable tekkers he has with deft flicks and touches that bamboozle the opposition defence, clearly loving playing in attack, and scoring a delicate well placed goal again today.
Crunchie Moments: TB and TC for their off the line clearances, Nathan for his great corner organisation and Charlie for his great heading work this game
Wispa Moment: Harry, for the flat on his back turtle impression, following his all or nothing header....
Finally thank you to Morgan and Joanna for coming along to support the team even though Morgan was not playing today due to the full squad being available. Thanks to everyone who helped clear down and to Claire for helping to set up. Thanks to all of you who came to give such important support to the boys I know they really appreciate it.
More help in setting up would be very much appreciated at the next home match.
