7 November 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 0 - 1 away win against Wythenshawe Town U10 (06/11/2010)
The Panthers made the short trip to Wythenshawe this week to try and build on the win against Unicorn Athletic just before the half term break.
A low sun made things difficult for the Wythenshawe keeper in the first period and the Panthers certainly tried to take advantage of this as the game was played almost entirely in the home teams half.
Scott was first to try his luck early on with a long range shot that was just wide, and shortly afterwards, a great shot on the turn just inside the area was well saved by the Wythenshawe keeper.
Scott then picked up the ball in midfield and after a great run crossed into the area, Calum controlled and side footed a well placed shot agonisingly wide of the left hand post. Then on the very next attack the very same combination play ended this time with the ball passing the right post. It looked like it was not going to be the Panthers day.
This seemed certain when a firm shot by Ben from outside the area after a goalmouth scramble crashed against the post.
A rare foray into the Wilmslow half by Wythenshawe and a hard volley from the edge of the area resulted in a good save by Tom, a virtual spectator throughout the first period.
The last couple of minutes were again played in the Wythenshawe area with shots coming in from all sides but the Panthers unable to make the breakthrough.
( First 15 minute period Wythenshawe Town 0 – Wilmslow Town 0)
The second period began, this time with the Panthers playing into the strong sun. Wythenshawe took early advantage of this and forced a quick corner. The resulting cross amazingly crossed the packed Panthers area missing everyone, when a mere touch would have given Wythenshawe an undeserved lead.
The Panthers quickly regained the upper hand again though with Will coming close with a shot that was well blocked at the last moment by a Wythenshawe defender, Sam D also came close, shooting over from a corner.
Wythenshawe were having more of a say though in this section of the game and Sam H and Tenniel were both required to make timely last man interceptions to prevent goal attempts by Wythenshawe.
The one nervous moment came when a high ball into the Panthers area was palmed away by Tom, who was unsighted because of the sun, but the ball was well cleared by an ever improving Panthers defence.
(Second 15 minute period Wythenshawe Town 0 – Wilmslow Town 0)
The final period had the Panthers facing the sun again, but this time the panthers put Wythenshawe firmly in the shade as their attacking play was relentless.
The captain, Joel, was worth his man of the match award on his performance in this period alone.
Straight from the kick off, a quick one two with Scott had him shooting just wide, and from the goal kick, he controlled the ball at the halfway line, and his first time shot was well saved.
Sam H then weighed in with his customary long distance thunderbolt, which again was well saved by the Wythenshawe keeper. Keep ‘em coming Sam, goal of the season is inevitable!.
Then when it seemed that we would be playing till teatime without a goal, Will took the ball down the left and hit a great shot, which this time the keeper could only parry the ball away, but Joel was bearing down for the rebound and made no mistake from 4 yards to make it one-nil to Wilmslow.
In the last minute Will had another cross into the area from the left that skimmed the crossbar and bounced over to the far side and Joel was unlucky not to add to his score with a solo effort that went narrowly wide.
