After last weeks disappointing performance against Benchill , where the Cougars could only manage a draw despite only playing against 9 men, this week the Cougars played host to Sale United Leopards. The boys were determined to improve on their previous showing and had sought to rectify some of the failings of the previous week in a tough Friday night training session. Buoyed by the return of Jake to their ranks the Cougars lined up in anticipation .
The starting eleven was Patrick in Goal, a back four of Luis and Atakan at full backs , with William and Jonathan central, a midfield four this week of Jake wide left Connor wide right and Reece central with Will playing as holding midfield. This left Emmanuel & Joe up front, and Jayden waiting in reserve.
The Team were reminded again beforehand of the importance of staying in their positions

1st Half
The Cougars started brightly and had the first attempt on goal, with Connor firing wide after a good run by Emmanuel. Sale then pushed forward and worked the ball well from right to left where they found a player over, his shot from outside the area gave Patrick no chance dipping in just under the crossbar, making it 0-1 to the visitors after only 2 minutes.
Not discouraged by this the Cougars set about repairing the damage. Luis and Atakan brought the ball out of defense well and linked with the midfield. Atakan was constantly reminded by screams from the sidelines and his team mates of not getting caught too far forward. William and Jonathan had little to trouble them in the middle with Will providing excellent cover in front of the back four.
Connor and Jake on the flanks were looking lively but could not get beyond a well organized Sale back line, In the middle it was very competitive with Joe and Reece and then Jayden when he came on fighting for every ball.
The Cougars slowly gained the upper hand and forced Sale backwards. On a rare break a Sale attacker was pole axed by a clearance from Jonathan hitting him square in the face, this delayed play for several minutes. Sale then forced a couple of Corners which were well cleared.
Just before the break Sale cleared yet another Cougars attack, The ball fell to Jonathan just inside the Sale half, despite shouts for hand ball and several players stopping the referee did not blow , the ball appearing to hit Jonathan’s chest. Jonathan played a great ball to Connor in space on the right, his strong shot from the edge of the area beating the Sale keeper to level the scores

2nd Half
Encouraged by their strong fight back the Cougars started the second half brightly , they maintained their 4-4-2 line up with Jake and Atakan swopping positions.
Emmanuel had a strong run down the left but could not get in a powerful enough effort to trouble the keeper. Sale then counter attacked and the ball was lobbed over the Cougars defense. A Sale attacker was first to the ball and lofted a ball beyond the advancing Patrick restoring Sale’s advantage.
This was disappointing as the Cougars started both halves strongly but had fallen behind for the second time. The Cougars again picked themselves up and went on the attack. Some of the bad habits from the previous week now resurfaced, several times the attack were caught offside and the unique 5-0-5 formation made a brief reappearance. The Cougars were however looking to pass the ball into space and this lead to several attempts on goal and the forcing of a series of corners.
Sale continued to look dangerous and Patrick was called into action and William cleared well from one attack. Jake on his return to the team also looked impressive in an unfamiliar right back role. On the counter the Cougars worked the ball to Emmanuel on the left he managed to wriggle past the last defender and lift a shot over the sale goalkeeper to level the scores.
Encouraged by this the Cougars set out looking for the winning goal , Reece was set free but again play was called back for offside, Connor Atakan and Joe all went close. The back four kept their line well this week in fact so well that even when we won a succession of corners we still had four lined up on the half way line marking a lone Sale forward. Although this prevents any danger it also means that the best headers in the team do not get involved in the set plays.
With a few minutes to go it was clear that both teams were going for the win. Playing through the crowded midfield the ball broke beyond the Sale back line for Emmanuel to chase. He managed to get a toe to the ball flicking it past the oncoming keeper and into the corner of the net for the winning goal.
Final Score 3-2

Summary
A much improved performance from the Cougars after two frustrating draws. The team showed tremendous spirit in twice coming from behind to gain victory. Still lots of aspects of play to work on in training but the boys demonstrated today that they are capable of listening and learning from their mistakes. Although many players are asked to play out of their preferred position they are showing great adaptability and team spirit in doing so.

Managers Thoughts
A tricky start with many a nerve wrecking moment for us watching from the sidelines but the Cougars showed their spirit yet again, fighting and never giving up – with an excellent result! Lots to improve on though in training, offsides, foul throws, and still moments where we don’t keep our formation well but these are all things we can work on. We kept the back four quite far back mainly because I was worried they wouldn’t get back in time if Sale had a breakthrough, we have struggled with that in the past, however we will see how it goes during the friendly next week and try out some different shapes and positions, allowing all of you to play in different positions. Overall, a great result and some great football – well done and let’s have much more of this!

Man of the Match
Awarded to Luis this week for a fine performance at left back, although not entirely comfortable in this position he was calm and composed on the ball, and moved the ball out of defense well.
