After a week off caused by a monsoon in the Wilmslow area the Cougars traveled to the depths of Wythenshawe to take on Benchill Celtic Vikings. The weeks break had been beneficial to those team members still recovering from the over zealous tackles received in the previous match against Ashton where the boys gained a point despite only having 10 players.

This week the Cougars had a full squad of 12 to chose from and were up against a Benchill team who could only muster 9 players.

The team started off with Patrick in Goal and a 4-4-2 formation Atakan and Luis at full backs with William and Jonathan in the centre . the midfield four of Callum left, Connor on the right, with Joe and Will, protecting the back four central.  Jayden and Emmanuel lead the attack with Reece held back in reserve.

1st Half

Despite the numerical advantage the Cougars could not initially get past the Benchill defense. The Vikings were packing their back line and were looking to break quickly, this meant the Cougars back line had nobody to mark most of the time, and when Benchill did counter Jonathan and William were easily able to avert any danger. Will sitting in front of the defense also meant that the full backs Luis and Atakan could get forward to support the attacks.

The Vikings played the offside trap well and the Cougars forward line were frustratingly caught out time after time. The Cougars did not help their cause either by continuing to try and take on the Vikings defense rather than pass it by them making use of our extra players. Connor did enjoy some success down the right but his crosses could not be converted by the Cougars forwards.

Callum picked up on a poor goal kick and unleashed a great shot from outside of the area which beat the keeper but unfortunately it rattled the cross bar and rebounded to safety. The Cougars were enjoying almost all of the possession but could not convert this into goals.

A rare break down the right saw the Vikings right winger get behind the defense , he still had a lot of work to do but hit a powerful shot from 20 yards which flew into the top right hand corner of the net giving Patrick no chance.

The Cougars continued to press for the remainder of the half and came close on several occasions with Emmanuel and Jayden both having goals ruled out for offside, and Joe and Reece also came close.

2nd Half

With the wind behind them in the second period and the sun in the Benchill goalkeepers eyes the Cougars immediately went on the attack. . Lewis moved further forward and Callum filled in at left back. The Cougars pressed forward with both Emmanuel and Reece going close to leveling the scores

Connor then took a corner from the right that the Vikings defense could not clear , the Ball fell to Jayden who finished coolly to level the scores

Emmanuel then went on one of his mazy runs down the left and had an attempt on goal . The Vikings goalkeeper who had been in inspired form throughout could not hold Emmanuel’s effort and the ball broke to Reece who was following up. He calmly stroked the ball into the empty net to make the score 2-1 to the Cougars.

Now in the ascendancy the Cougars continued to pour forward looking to increase their lead.

After falling behind the Vikings became more adventurous and tried to push forward in search of the equalizing goal , a couple of times the managed to get through on the left hand side bur Patrick covered well. Play was moving from end to end and the Cougars did not help their cause by seeming to play a bizarre  5-0-5 formation.

With the Cougars unable to increase their lead despite having plenty of efforts on goal the inevitable happened Benchill broke on the right and a one on one with Patrick resulted. The Vikings attacker showed what should be done in this position and slid the ball past Patrick and across the goal for one of his colleagues running in unmarked to score with a tap in from a yard.

There was just time for one last attack. Both reams were going all out for the win . The Cougars broke with 5 players bearing down on the Benchill goal . The winning goal surely! . Unfortunately not, The Vikings keeper made a vital save from a relatively tame shot, much to the disappointment of the vocal Wilmslow supporters on the touchline already celebrating the winning goal.

The final whistle went seconds afterwards with the scores level.

Final Score 2-2

Summary
Despite some good individual displays this was a poor team performance by the Cougars and definitely two points dropped rather than one gained. Great credit should go to the Vikings though for a determined defensive performance. There are lots of lessons to be learned from this match and points that the team can work on in training . It is never easy playing against a team that are short in numbers though, and the boys can already look back on a solid start to the season.

Managers Thoughts

This should have been an easy win for us but it turned out differently and we were lucky to come away with a point. Despite our collective disappointment, I think the experience has been a useful and worthwhile one for both the players and the management.   We can take a lot of things away from the game to concentrate on in training, such as using space, keeping positions, communicating as a team and not get caught offside. These are all things we will be working on over the next couple of weeks.

Several factors contributed to the end result on Sunday. I made the mistake of playing several players in their preferred positions rather than where they play best and that cost us at least one goal.   I will pick this up during training on Friday and explain to the boys that we are a team and have to put in a team performance and that means not always being in your preferred position but rather the one where your contribute most to the team. Also, I expect every player to respect my decisions both during match days and training – what Gary and I say goes and everyone has to listen to our instructions and comply with them immediately rather than conveniently ignoring them – it could easily have cost us the game altogether!

This being said, I am very proud of the boys – there is great spirit and enthusiasm in the team, no infighting, bickering or blaming when things go wrong, you all support each other and are a united front – now we need to channel that energy and enthusiasm into playing and winning games! Now that we have Jake joining us again from next week after his gap summer off :-), the team can only go from strength to strength!

Man of the Match

Awarded to Connor  this week for a fine performance on the right , he always looked dangerous and was involved in all the teams best moves.
