Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 4 - 2 home win against Sale United JFC U9 (09/10/2010)

Ist Period

After last weeks hard fought battle against Unicorn where the Panthers just managed to hold onto their 100% record despite letting a two goal lead slip, Saturday saw us hosting Sale United who like our previous two opponents had enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season. The games in division D of the U9 league now seem more competitive and will continue to be so following the addition of two strong teams promoted from Division E. The Team were therefore reminded that they would need to continue to be at their best if they were to preserve their impressive record, they were also warned beforehand not to underestimate the opposition just because they had a girl in the team, it seems that previous Sale opposition had done this and were punished as a result,

The Panthers had a full squad to select from with all the boys raring to go

The team started off with Gabriel in Goal a back two of Martin and Davy, three in the middle with Ben captain for the day wide right, Jack wide left and Sam in the middle, with Dillan alone up front.

The Panthers started brightly and signaled their intent moving the ball around between the defense and midfield freely all the outfield players got a touch in the opening minute. Despite having the majority of possession they were unable to fashion any clear cut chances in the early stages.

Our first attempt on goal came from Ben who saw his shot turned around the post for a corner. From Jacks corner Dillan fired narrowly wide. Sam, Ben and Jack were controlling the midfield , this allowed both Davy and Martin to get forward and support the attack.

Mid way through the half Martin rescued a ball going out for a throw in on the left, with nobody in support he cut inside and decided to chance his luck from distance. His powerfully struck shot hit the back of the net before the Sale goalkeeper had a chance to react. 1-0 to the Panthers

The Panthers now looked comfortable and came close to extending their lead on several occasions.

Just towards the end of the period though and against the run of play Sale broke away down the right, the cross from the byline was dispatched with ease by an oncoming attacker to level the scores.

Ist period score 1-1

2nd Period

The second period saw a number of positional changes Oliver and Martin now formed the back line Marcus joined the action in midfield and Aidan wide right with Dillan upfront.

Sale looked to press forward but Martin and Oliver snuffed out any attacks, with help from Marcus and Ben tracking back from midfield. The Panthers continued to dominate possession.

The Panthers then won a corner on the right which Marcus delivered into the middle of the area with pace. The ball fell to Aidan who controlled well and finished from close range.

From another well delivered Marcus corner Oliver headed narrowly wide.

The second period ended with play alternating from end to end but the Panthers looking the team most likely to score.

2st period score 2-1

3rd Period

The final third saw Sam and Jack return to the action , Sam joined Oliver in defense and Martin moved into midfield. Marcus and Aidan formed the attack.

Joining in from the back Oliver was first to a weak goal kick , his first time effort went narrowly wide. Sale were not done with though and Gabriel made a good save low down by his right hand post.

The Panthers then restored their two goal advantage Jack delivered an in-swinging corner from the right that found the net via a Sale defender.

Sale still continued to battle back and Gabriel was forced into a series of good saves , He held onto the ball well each time giving Sale nothing to follow up on . He also found his own team mates well from goal kicks. After having virtually nothing to do in the early season games he is now in the thick of the action every week, and has demonstrated what a fine goalkeeper he is. This gives the Panthers a real advantage over some other teams who seem to rotate their keepers each period.

From a corner Sale reduced the defecit with a fine header that gave Gabriel no chance. The Panthers were now under a lot of pressure and Sale also hit a post and came close with several other attempts.

The Panthers then broke forward and Jack picked up the ball on the left, moving to the edge of the area he shot on goal , the keeper was beaten but the ball struck the right hand post and came out. Aidan again in the right place at the right time pounced on the loose ball and finished well making the score 4-2 to the Panthers.

Great credit should go to Sale who provided the Panthers with another stern test and competed right up to the final whistle in an effort to protect their own unbeaten record..

Final score 4-2

Summary
Despite looking a little sleepy at the start (must have been a late Friday night!) therefore not looking as sharp as in previous matches the Panthers ground out another victory thus retaining their 100% record. Although the matches are likely to be tougher going forward now the league has been re-organised the Panthers who play an attractive passing game are going to be a good match for any team in the league.

Man of the Match

Gold - Gabriel – A fine performance with several critical saves and good distribution of the ball from goal kicks.
