3 October 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 1 - 1 away draw with Unicorn Athletic JFC U10 Dragons (02/10/2010)
The Panthers started this week very brightly and straight from the kick off were attacking the Unicorn’s goal, some good pressure and ball skill from Calum forcing an early corner.
The first Unicorn attack soon followed though and finished with a good cross into the Wilmslow area and a great header was on target but safely gathered by Tom.
The Panthers were really passing well with Sam D, Calum and Scott linking up well in the first period but were continually frustrated in the Unicorns area by some good saves from the keeper and some equally good defensive play.
The midfield was battling hard, and after some particularly determined play from Joel, he came away with the ball and threaded a pass through to Lincoln who was narrowly wide with his first time shot. A Lincoln corner soon followed and this time it was Joel with the final shot that was just over the bar.
But just as the 1st period was coming to a close it was the Unicorns who broke the deadlock. A quick breakaway down the left, had the Wilmslow defence stranded in no mans land and a hard shot fizzed across the goal and into the top corner of the net giving Tom no chance.
( First 15 minute period Wilmslow Town 0 – JFC Dragons 1)
Wilmslow were determined to get back on level terms and they were straight away on the offensive as the second half began. Joel crossing into the Unicorns area well and Sam D met it well but put the ball just over.
The constant pressuring of the Unicorns defence was starting to tell, and a poor goal kick was met with a great first time shot from Joel, but again was just wide.
Finally the Panthers got their deserved reward when Sam D took the ball down the right wing, got down to the by-line and crossed into a crowded Unicorn goalmouth. The ball passed right across the area and there on the left side was Will who managed to slot the ball through a very tight space and in off the left hand post to equalise.
The Panthers were starting to gain the upper hand now. Joel and Will exchanging great passes through midfield put Sam D in a good position but his shot was well saved.
When a Unicorn back pass was picked up by the keeper outside the area, it was a great opportunity for Joel to take one of his trademark free kicks, but a well positioned wall diverted the shot wide.
The Unicorns did cause a scare late in the second period when a well struck shot was narrowly wide, but Tom was almost a spectator for the majority of this part of the game.
( Second 15 minute period Wilmslow Town 1 – JFC Dragons 1)
The final period of the game was a bit frustrating for the Panthers as some great play didn’t produce what would have been a thoroughly deserved winner.
Ben came on and was immediately involved with a couple of good efforts. The keeper saving well from the first to tip the ball round the post for a corner and the second seemed a certain goal as Ben ran onto a pass from Joel but somehow the keeper managed to paw the shot away.
The unicorns were restricted to shots from outside the area, none of which troubled Tom, although there was another heart stopping moment towards the end of the game when an in swinging corner from the right hit the Wilmslow post.
Will, Sam H and Joel all had long range shots well saved as the game came to a close. Sam H, never afraid to try his luck from distance, must by the law of averages score the goal of the season anytime soon!.
Despite a very good effort by the Panthers the points were shared.
