2 October 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Panthers 2 - 1 home win against Alderley United U11 A (02/10/2010)
A local derby for the U11 Panthers this morning as they hosted Alderley United's A team in the first meeting between the two clubs at this age group.
Wilmslow dominated the first 30 minutes as Alderley struggled to win possession outside their own half. We saw some good passing play from the Panthers up to and into the Alderley box, but on each occasion the attacks were successfully contained by a resolute Alderley defence. Eventually a goal came, as Matias collected the ball near the penalty spot, pushed it into space and shot across the 'keeper (who had an excellent game) into the bottom right corner.
Wilmslow's second followed shortly afterwards when Rohan was blocked in the area and Jack stepped up to coolly despatch the resulting penalty. There could, and should, have been more as the Panthers continued to press the opposition, but failed to convert three good close-range chances to increase their lead.
The second half was an altogether different affair. Alderley started brighter and were soon back in the game after Wilmsow's defence failed to clear a bouncing ball in the middle of the box and the opposition striker finished with some style past a stranded Henners. There was no panic in the Panthers' ranks, however they struggled to maintain possession as they had done in the first half and found themselves under constant pressure in their defensive third as a result. Alderley continued to go after the game and created a number of half chances but were only able to fashion one clear goal-scoring opportunity, which was sliced wide.
As the minutes ticked away, the Panthers combined well to complete their defensive duties and were pleased to hear the final whistle that sealed a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
The boys will be pleased with their win today, and will doubtless enjoy it again in the playground on Monday! However, they made hard work of a game that they should have won by half time. Credit to Alderley for battling through a testing opening period and then coming back into the game strongly in the second half. Expect to see both of these teams in the top 4 at the end of the season.
MOTM awards this week selected by Nathan's dad. Bronze to Max for his endeavour down the right wing and defensive contribution in the latter stages. Silver to Matias for his well-taken goal and Gold to Jack for a performance full of composure and vision.
