25 September 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 5 - 3 home win against Ashton on Mersey JFC U9 (25/09/2010)
Ist Period
After a fantastic start to the season with a 100% record and a goal difference of +35 with no goals conceded in 3 matches the Panthers lined up for their 4th match together in what looked on paper a tougher test against Ashton On Mersey. Ashton also had a 100% record from their first 3 fixtures so something had to give.
After last weeks demolition of Alderley morale was high. The team talk from Chris beforehand reminded the team that they would need to play to their best, and as a team, if they were to preserve their unbeaten record. This week they were also without Marcus.
The team started off with Gabriel in Goal a back line of Davy, Martin and Oliver, with Sam, Ben, and Dillan who was captain for the day forming the attack.
Opening exchanges were even and it was obvious straight away that Gabriel who had barely touched the ball in the previous two games would be called into action this week. Dillan who was to prove a handful for the Ashton defense throughout had the first attempt on target. The deadlock was broken when one of Martin’s long throws was turned into his own goal by an Ashton defender. Not for the first time this season on the narrow home pitch at Lacey Green had this tactic led to a goal. Ashton immediately went on the counter and Gabriel was forced into making a good save. The Panthers then extended their lead with a great team move. An Ashton attack broke down on the edge of the area. Oliver bought the ball out of defense and found Sam on the halfway line. Sam beat a player and moved forward slipping the ball to Martin, Martin had a powerful shot from the edge of the area that the keeper could only parry into the path of Dillan following up. Dillan scored with ease making it 2-0 to the Panthers.

2nd Period
With a narrow lead the Panthers made a couple of positional changes for the 2nd period. Jack and Aidan replaced Dillan and Oliver, Ben moved to defense and Davy and Aidan formed the attack.
Ashton immediately went on the attack forcing Gabriel into a couple of good saves, The Panthers then conceded their first goal of the season when Gabriel could only parry an Ashton shot, an Ashton forward was quickest to the loose ball and made the score 2-1 to the Panthers. Action moved from end to end but from a quick breakaway the ball was played through the otherwise reliable Panther defense for a forward to run onto to level the scores. The Panthers appeared to be wobbling a little and Ashton briefly had the initiative.
The Panthers then composed themselves and went on the attack. A goalmouth scramble led to Davy having an attempt which Aidan got the final touch to making the score 3-2
Ashton replied with an absolute thunderbolt of a shot from outside the area to level the scores again. Gabriel injured himself in attempting to save and had to leave the field injured playing no further part in the match. Martin took over in goal.
The Panthers again pushed forward. From a cleared attack the ball went to Ben on the right touchline just inside the Ashton half , nothing seemed on but Ben produced a wonderful strike which sailed over the Ashton keeper to make the score 4-3 to the Panthers. This proved to be the turning point of the game!
Both sets of supporters agreed that this was turning into a great game of football between two evenly matched teams. Jack who continued to work away in search of his first goal had an effort well saved.
2nd Period score 4-3
3rd Period
The final third saw Dillan coming back on in place of Ben.
Ashton continued to press forward in search of another equalizer and Martin had to come out quickly to block an early attack. Apart from that, the defense provided great cover and the Panthers continued to look dangerous on the break.
Davy moved forward and found Dillan on the edge of the Ashton box with a great pass. Dillan controlled well and fired a great shot past the Ashton keeper to make the score 5-3
Despite absorbing a great deal of Ashton pressure the Panthers played in a calm and composed manner passing their way out of trouble.
The final whistle went signaling another Panthers victory.
Great credit should go to Ashton who provided the Panthers with their toughest test of the season to date.
