2 May 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 0 - 3 away win against Wilmslow Sports JFC U9 (01/05/2010)
With Cougars under par display last week, perhaps a local derby against a very good Sports side was just what they needed, and that proved to be the case. Cougars had two players missing due to illness and injury but were glad to have the services of Harry back after his dust cloud extended holiday. The first third was a nip and tuck affair with Cougars just shading it on points, the team lined up with Martin in nets, Ben and Luke at the back, a midfield of Olivia, Neeki and Charlie with Will up front and sole substitute Harry chomping at the bit after his lengthy lay off. Cougars had a couple of half chances which never really tested the Sports keeper although on another day with the right bounce they could of come in one or two goals up. Sports were a little unlucky themselves shooting over from the edge of the area.

The second third saw the introduction of Harry up front with Will dropping into the left hand side of midfield, they were under instructions to go out and play the type of football they are capable of. Cougars responded superbly with some fantastic football, the centre of midfield belonged to Neeki who gave a performance well above his years and Will and Charlie made the most of every pass. After a succession of corners and excellent attacking play it was only a matter of time before the breakthrough came. It came from a quality move down the Cougars right, Ben took a throw in to Neeki who drew the left back out and passed a through ball to Harry, Harry turned to his right and returned the ball to Neeki who had moved forward into a good space in front of goal, this drew the rest of the Sports defence towards him anticipating the shot, Neeki laid the ball off to Will who placed the ball powerfully past the helpless Sports Keeper. Cougars were now in complete control of this third and every time Sports got anywhere near the Cougars goal, Ben and Luke snuffed out any threat. The second goal came from a corner and what a goal it was, as the ball was played into the area the Cougars players attacked it aggressively, it was not clear whether the ball was cleared or a Cougars player played it out to Will, what was clear is Will smashed into the back of the net from twenty yards with a rocket that the keeper couldn’t have seen.

The last third Cougars were told that the next goal would be crucial to the side that scored It, It Sports scored it would lift them and if Cougars scored it should be game over. The Cougars wasted no time and scored in the first minute with Will scoring his second hat trick of the season finishing well after receiving a defence splitting ball from Neeki. Cougars now played some good football to the end of the game and Martin made three good saves which reminded the Cougars that they have to play from the referee’s first whistle to his last. All in all this was a good display against Sports who we have only narrowly beaten this season on penalties in the cup and lost to at home in the league. The Cougars can look forward to playing them next year and the bragging rights belong with them for the next few months at least.

MOTM: It’s unusual for a player to score three goals and not get MOTM but three goals is reward in itself and you can not score three goals without a good team behind you, that is why this weeks MOTM goes to a young man who gave an all round wonderful performance setting up two goals and controlling the middle of the park, Neeki has been fabulous all season but he was different class in this game, Well done.
