1 May 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Jaguars 2 - 3 home defeat to Stockport Vikings U11 (29/04/2010)
And so it came to pass. The division title would be decided by the results of the last two fixtures against Stockport Vikings. Put simply, if the Jaguars were to win tonight, they would be champions. If there was any other result, the fate of this season's endeavours would go to the return fixture on Saturday.
The boys lined up in a 4-4-2 formation. Fin continuing his rehabilitation from injury in goal, the defence of Neil, Ted, Tom and Charlie. Jamie, Hector, Brendan and Sam in midfield, with Kieran and Shorty up front. Subs TJ and Connor were prepared and ready for action.
The boys started nervously, lacking composure and rushing passes and shots. The Vikings also appeared similarly afflicted, playing long balls over the top which were ably dealt with by Tom and Ted. The game was tense and scappy without either team able to get an upper hand.
The first chance fell to the Jaguars who were slowly building pressure from corners. Neil lofted a 'peach' which Ted met with a plum' volley only for it to go straight at the goalkeeper.
The lost opportunity proved costly. Against the run of play, the Vikings scored the important first goal. The ball was not defended from a throw -in, a melee in the box, the ball fell to a Viking who poked the ball into the back of the net.
The goal settled the Vikings but, it was the Jaguars who responded, continuing to have more of the play. The attacks resulted in more pressure on the Vikings goal and in one challenge the goalkeeper was injured and had to leave the field, being replaced by his full back. Would this be the game change? As the half drew to a close, there was a break by Kieran down the left, he looked up, saw Shorty, and crossed perfectly for the goal of the season! Shorty took the ball on the volley and in one movement smashed the ball into the back of the net. A fantastic goal, 1-1 Game on.
At the start of the second half also the Jaguars probably edged it, having more of the play in the Vikings half, but without working the substitute goalkeeper. The Vikings were reduced to breaks but it was from one of these breaks that they took the lead again. A break down the left, the Jaguars defence all moved towards the ball, the ball broke to the back of the penalty box and the unmarked Vikings substitute took aim and fired giving Fin no chance.
Unjust? Possibly, but the boys fought back. The game continued in the same vein, a match of attrition.
With ten minutes remaining after some good work by Charlie, Kieran picked up the ball, looked up and shot from range. The ball looped into the back corner of the net. 2-2. The boys were back in it!
But not for long. Straight from the kick off, the Vikings built an attack, another shot from range, brushed Neil's head and deflected past Fin. A deflection! Was the incessant rain a sign from above that the Gods were not smiling on the boys this evening?
Again the Jaguars responded, a shout for a penalty, turned down, Shorty just over-ran a one on one with the 'keeper, a ball cleared off the line, and a goal in the last minute ruled out for a challenge on the goalkeeper!
Full time; Cue wild delight from the Vikings, a determined team talk to the boys. Make no mistake, after the intial nerves had disappeared this was an excellent performance. It was, 'one of those games' .The substitute goalkeeper 'played a blinder '(he held onto everything), the Vikings had three chances and scored three goals. The mark of a good team. Saturday can't come quick enough. It's 0-0 again and winner takes all. If we play the way we know we can do, we will get the breaks, we will create the chances and we will score the goals. Let's do it boys!
Goalscorers; Shorty (1), Kieran (1).
GBK Man of the Match; Kieran -the mark of a good player, is one that not only has the talent and the skill, but uses it and delivers on the big occasion The difference between say Berbatov and Rooney. Kieran gave everything tonight, he ran every blade of grass, he challenged for every ball, he headed, he dribbled, he tackled, he passed and he scored. His performance tonight was outstanding. The other mark of a good player is to make sure his next performance is better than the previous one. Let's do it again on Saturday Kieran.
