25 April 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 4 - 3 away defeat to Altrincham FC Juniors U9 Knights (24/04/2010)
The Cougars were below par this week with no excuses, they could say they were under strength with two players missing or they had a semi final win hangover, but the truth is Altrincham wanted to win this game more than the Cougars did. Cougars however were not out played and they played the best football of the two sides when they had the ball. Altrincham opened the scoring with a very fortunate own goal, the Knights forward shot across the Cougars area which was heading out for a throw in, the ball hit Bens arm and was deflected into the net. Cougars had a few efforts in this third but they could not break the Knights defence down.

Cougars went out in the second third and looked like themselves, they were unlucky not to equalise with a number of efforts from Will and Neeki. They did finally get their just desert with an excellent placed low shot from Luke. This lifted the Cougars and they pushed hard to take the lead, their passing was not what it should be but they tried hard and went ahead after Ben crossed the ball into the area and Neeki scored with a well controlled header. They should have gone on from here and won this game but it was Martin in the Cougars goal who was the busier of the two keepers making a quality save from a well struck shot.

The Cougars now had to find an extra gear to win this game as Altrincham were chasing down every ball, and it was no surprise when they equalised although the Cougars were unlucky to concede, as the ball was cleared from a Knights corner it hit Joe’s leg and rebounded into the net for a second own goal. Cougars pushed again and took the lead for a second time through Will with a well struck shot into the bottom corner of the net. Altrincham equalised shortly after levelling the game and making it a nervous last five minutes. Altrincham took the lead with a scrappy goal that the cougars should have cleared having two attempts to clear.

MOTM - its always hard to pick a MOTM after a defeat but Luke played with the right attitude and was gracious in defeat which is something the Cougars need to work on ( but hopefully we wont get to much practice at this).
