Semi-Final success at Sale - a knockout performance from the U9 Cougars

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 1 - 3 away win against Sale United JFC U9 (B) (17/04/2010)

After a lengthy Easter lay off the Cougars finally resumed their season’s quest for silverware in the semi final of the league cup. The Cougars started slowly and looked a little rusty, they conceded a corner in the first minute and defended poorly allowing Sale a free header to score at the near post for the worst possible start. They now had to show some character and that is exactly what they did. The Cougars pushed hard for an equaliser and were dominant for the rest of the first third. The well deserved equaliser came from a disputed throw in on the right, Ben threw the ball to Freddie who beat his man and crossed to Will who smashed a sweet left footer into the top left hand corner of the net. Cougar’s midfield of Luke, Neeki and Freddie (capt) were excellent and Ben and Joe had no real problems stopping the occasional break that Sale could muster.

The second third saw the Cougars play some powerful stuff with Will unlucky not to take the lead with a good shot from the edge of the box which just skimmed the bar. Cougars took the lead with a good piece of play through the midfield, Charlie beat his man and found Neeki with a neat forward pass, Neeki held the ball up well and it looked like he would take the shot on himself but he spotted Will in a better position, he played great ball through to Will who placed it into the bottom corner of the net. Sale again only looked dangerous on the break and Martin made a number of good saves and cleaned up the Sale long ball well. Olivia had a good second third and her passing was good throughout.

Sale really had no option now but to go for it and although they had some good possession they never really looked like scoring. The Cougars defended superbly, even after a string of four successive corners it was always the Cougars who looked favourite to score. Neeki and Luke were unlucky hitting shots just over. Olivia was causing Sale problems with a string of good crosses. It was from one of Olivia’s crosses that the Cougars scored their third goal. Will won the ball in the midfield and found Olivia down the right; she played a quick ball into Neeki who calmly walked the ball into the back of the net. With not long left Ben brought down a Sale attacker from behind, he was lucky not to be carded as the attacker was bearing down on goal. From the resulting free kick Cougars wall stood firm deflecting it for a corner which they dealt with well.

45 minutes: Sale United 1 Wilmslow Town Cougars 3

Wilmslow Town Cougars were a credit to the club in this game they played very well and with an excellent attitude. The man of the match this week and will be captain in the final for his efforts is Will. He worked tirelessly for his team and scored two goals as well. Well done Cougars for getting to the final, now let’s go and win it.

Unfortunately Harry was unavailable due to the volcanic cloud and is stuck in America hopefully he will be back for the final.
