31 March 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Jaguars 1 - 6 away win against FC Blue Star U11 Galaxy (27/03/2010)
After last week's excellent friendly performance, the Jaguars were in good heart and good form going into Saturday's match with FC Blue Star Galaxy.
The Galaxy's home turf of Didsbury Road Primary School and it's rolling views over the Mersey Valley were bathed in bright sunshine as the Black Cats lined up with Fin returning in goal, a back line of Neil, Ted, Tom and Brendan (in Charlie's absence), TJ and Sam in midfield, supported by Natty and Jamie on the wings, with Shorty and Kieran up front. Connor again stalked the touchline ever ready to make an appearance from the subs bench.
The Galaxy boys looked much stronger and were certainly much bigger than the Jaguars, and the game started and continued in a ragged fashion without either team being able to impose itself. The Jaguars gradually started to play the better football and slowly build some momentum. This was reflected in the cormer count which eventually provided the basis for a winning lead.
The first goal came from a cleared corner when Natty threaded an invitation pass to Kieran who gladly RSVP'd and blasted the ball into the back of the net. The second goal also came from a corner. This time Brendan just got in front of Kieran to score after a goalmouth scramble.
2-0 and the Jaguars were now in the ascendency. TJ was jinking, distributing and creating in midfield, and the wingers were finding the space to raid the Galaxy's box, with Natty again unlucky in front of goal with two gilt edged opportunities, he contrived to miss.
The Jaguars could take no credit for the third goal however -an unfortunate own goal after pressure from Shorty.
3-0 at half time amd Sam was withdrawn and Connor sent on to stretch the Galaxy's defence with his pace and natural instinct to attack.
Galaxy started the second half in a more positive frame and quickly scored a goal, taking advantage of some passing in the wrong areas (ie; across the back!) by the Jaguars' defence.
No matter. The Jaguars regrouped. Kieran followed in a Jamie free kick which the 'keeper had tipped onto the bar, Natty was replaced by Sam, who promptly passed a ball to Shorty to score, and when Natty replaced Fin in goal, who replaced Shorty up front (are you following this?), Connor produced some real Bobby Dazzler wing play, which Fin converted into the bottom corner of the net for the Jaguars' sixth goal.
A well deserved 6-1 win. The play was a bit anxious at times, the passing not very sure and often astray, but the better team prevailed -despite some choice language being directed at the boys and a lack of respect shown by Galaxy's players to the (young) referee. We will know what to expect in the return fixture.
Goalscorers; Kieran (2), Shorty (1), Fin (1), Brendan (1), Own goal (1)
GBK Man of the Match; TJ -it has seemed like a stop start season for TJ but in this fixture he imposed his workrate, skills and creativity onto the midfield and of more importance to the team performance, he kept to his position. One of the lessons being learned this season is that, if instead of chasing the ball, we are disciplined and keep our position, we will actually see more of the ball. TJ's performance today was proof of this maxim. Let's play football with our feet, and our heads! Well done TJ.
