U11 Jaguars maul Poynton - the boys take control!

22 March 2010

Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Jaguars 9 - 2 home win against Poynton JFC U11 (20/03/2010)

As this scheduled fixture had been played earlier this season, the opportunity was taken by both teams to keep some momentum in the season and play the match as a friendly at the Jaguars' home lair.

After two previous weeks of drills in training, the boys were given the opportunity to take responsibility for training themselves on Friday night –and very good it was too, a good warm up, followed by two even teams playing sixty minutes of passing football. And most pleasing of all, it was taken seriously by every boy with no one messing about.

So good in fact that the boys were rewarded with also taking control of the friendly on Saturday morning, with minimal interference/coaching (delete as appropriate) from the Management team.

The Jaguars lined up with Brendan starting in goal, a back line of Neil, Charlie, Ted and Tom, Sam and Hector holding midfield, Jamie being given a free central midfield role, and Kieran, Shorty and Natty up front. Connor made a welcome return from illness and injury to bench.

The performance was fantastic! Poynton were depleted, but every match must still be won. A 9-2 victory tells only half the story. This was by far the best team performance of the season. There was real quality in some of the passing moves, some of the goals would have graced Match of the Day, and several players were back to their absolute best.

Brendan and Ted each did a stint for their team mates in goal, Neil –who couldn’t hit a barn door in the warm up scored a ‘screamer’, Sam and Hector played with discipline and patrolled the middle of the park, Jamie sprayed the ball well in the first half, and Kieran was back to his best, using his skills in the right areas, scoring 6 goals as a result. Shorty weighed in with 2 goals himself despite only playing in the first half. Brilliant football boys –can we watch you play like that every week?

It’s back to business next week with our first fixture of the season away against FC Blue Star Galaxy –who hammered Chinley 5-0 last week. So having really enjoyed ourselves this weekend, we must be focussed next Saturday, not be complacent, take the game seriously, and definitely not under-estimate the opposition. Let’s make sure we’re up for it.

Goalscorers; Double hat trick hero Kieran (6), Shorty (2), Neil (1)

GBK Man of the Match; Kieran –how could it be anyone else after scoring 6 goals? After being below his usual level in recent matches, Kieran produced a match winning performance –remembering not to take too many touches, to play a pass to a team mate in a better position, and to shoot when he had the first opportunity. Now the challenge is to remember to play the same way in every match between now and the end of the season.
