20 February 2010 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 3 - 1 home win against Sale United JFC U9 (B) (20/02/2010)
On the back of last weeks win Cougars stuck with their more attacking formation hoping to improve their win record against Sale. Joe was captain for the day against his old team. Cougars were in good form from the kick off. The early exchanges were dealt with confidently by Joe and Ben and if Sale managed to get past them Martin cleaned up nicely. Wilmslow started to boss the possession and it paid off within the first five minutes with the midfield winning the ball through Charlie and Freddy who fed the ball to Will who skilfully beat his man and found Neeki to his left, Neeki wrong footed his marker and smashed the ball through the keepers legs to take the lead. Cougars now looked good for a second and after a number of near misses and good saves by the Sale keeper Cougars won a corner on their right, Ben took a perfect corner and dipped the ball to back of the box, Neeki gave nobody any chance to clear or save his superb right foot volley into the top right hand corner. What a fantastic goal.
15 minutes: Wilmslow Town Cougars 2 Sale United 0
Cougars made three changes in the second third bringing Olivia and Luke on in the midfield and Harry on up front. Sale were now having a real go at Wilmslow and the game became quite physical but fair, the Referee managed this well letting play go when he could and bringing it back when no advantage was gained. From defence the ball was played to Harry on the left who beat his man and drew the Sale central defender towards him leaving a large gap at the heart of their defence, Olivia sprinted in to it and Harry played the pass of the game to her, she took the ball with a good first touch and blasted it past the oncoming keeper to make it 3-0. Cougars were in complete control towards the end of this third and but for an unlucky bounce it should have been four.
30 minutes: Wilmslow Town Cougars 3 Sale United 0
Again Cougars made changes at the start of the final third and they stared well every body knew their positions and did what was expected of them. Sale were playing well now and although they were restricted to long ball tactics it would have paid off but for the all round goal keeping by Martin. With five minutes to go Cougars hit the self destruct button when Sale scored after a goal mouth scramble, Cougars had three good opportunities to clear the ball but did not, which stopped Martin getting the clean sheet he deserved.
45 minutes: Wilmslow Town Cougars 3 Sale United 1
The Referee had a quick word with both teams at the end of the match as bad language was reported from both sides which is a sending off offense, I know football is an emotive game but we need all our players on the pitch, so no more swearing please.
MOTM again this was a very difficult decision which is a good thing as it means all the team played well but it was between Joe, Ben and Martin for the confidence they give the team to play in front of them with Martin just shading it with a fearless performance.
