U9 Cougars win at home to Altrincham - putting five past the Knights

13 February 2010

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 5 - 3 home win against Altrincham FC Juniors U9 Knights (13/02/2010)

After all the fun and games with the weather, it was great to finally get a game on this weekend, and the Cougars were fired up for it. After a unconvincing run of results prior to this we decided to change the formation to a more attacking line up with 2 at the back 3 in midfield and 1 up top. From the kick off this seemed to be working with most of the game played in Altrincham’s half of the pitch.

The starting line up of Martin, Ben, Joe, Charlie (capt) Luke, Neeki and Will played some excellent attacking football and it was not long before Neeki opened the scoring with a well placed side foot shot into the bottom corner of the net. Altrincham were limited to smash and grab tactics in the first third and but for a good piece of defending from Ben who cleared off the line, it could have been them who scored the first goal. Cougars were playing well though and there passing game caused Altrincham all sorts of problems with a series of shots and half chances stretching Altrincham’s defence to the max. It was from a Cougars corner that the next goal was scored, unfortunately it went against them, Altrincham cleared the corner with a long punt down the pitch, this cleared the Cougars defence and fell to an Altrincham forward who left Martin no chance.

Cougars made two changes in the second third with Freddy on up front and Harry on in the midfield. Altrincham came out fighting and had some success in the first few minutes of the third, but with Martin improving every game, this led to nothing. Cougars stepped up their work rate and it was from a hard fought midfield battle with Harry and Charlie winning the ball on the edge of the Knights box, the ball spun out to Neeki who chipped it over everybody including the keeper scoring a lovely goal to make it two. The Cougars were in control of the game now and Luke played a lovely ball on the diagonal to Harry who was brought down in the area, a penalty was correctly awarded which Harry took. Harry hit the ball firm to the keeper’s right who guessed correctly and palmed away for a corner. From the resulting corner the ball was half cleared and Will smashed the rebound into the Knights net.

The final third started like the end of the second with the Cougars in control and it was not long before they extended their lead.  In a goalmouth scramble the ball crossed the line but was cleared by an Altrincham defender, the referee was in a good position to see and rightly awarded the goal. Charlie was next to score after a good piece of play in the midfield with Neeki playing the ball through for Charlie to run on to and place past the Altrincham keeper. At 5-1 and two minutes to go the Cougars went to sleep and allowed Altrincham to score two late goals.

MOTM -  This was a close one to call between Joe and Ben but Joe was awarded it for his hard work.
